If I go on a dove hunt in mexico and the limit on the hunt is 250 a day; 1: will I be able to bring those birds back with me into Texas? and 2: If I am able to bring the birds across the border what would happen if I get stoped and checked?

Thanks

Nope. You can only cross the border with a certain # of birds.

Last I went it was 70 per person.

Not sure if that has changed or not.

Anything we didn't eat while there went to the bird boys and the hungry folks in town.

This is from he TPWD website:
Importation Limit
It is illegal to import into the United States migratory game birds belonging to another person. The number of migratory game birds imported from Mexico may not exceed the export limit set by the Mexican state from which they were taken.
It references Waterfowl but a dove is migratory so I would imagine it applies as well. Link here

Whatever limit that Mexican State has set you can bring back: Here is the info

4Exportation of trophies or game (from Mexico to the U.S.A)

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Regulations:

For the 2007-2008 hunting season, the requirements to export trophies from México to USA are the following.

The harvested trophy must have the tag or band (cintillo) affixed to the trophy (exotic animals do not require a tag or band).

The Hunting contract must indicate the name of the hunter and the ranch owner and be signed by both.

The hunting contract must indicate the type of species to be hunted, the number of the species wich can be harvested and the harvest authorization number.

The hunting contract can only be used once and will be cancelled when the trophy or game is exported to the U.S., if the hunter exports a trophy or game to the U.S., and the hunter indicates species other than those wich are being exported, the hunter must obtain a new contract from the ranch owner to be able to import those other species.

We have done both. I recommend NOT taking your own gun thought. It is a huge pain in the Arse and you get hassled lots while you are down there.

The year we took our own guns we got pulled over twice and had to pay road money "bribe" to keep going with our guns even though we had all the paperwork and licenses.

Just a hassle.

And yes 13 to 15 per box is about the norm right now. Expect to shoot 10 - 15 boxes per day.

I went in '06 and you could bring 125 birds back, they'll check all the birds at the border to be sure there are no organs left in them, and you dont have more than your alotted amount, i believe they also gave us a document stating they were killed in Mexico and had been checked at the border.

$13-15 a box should be the going rate, and dont take your own gun, IMO, shoot their's. Most outfitter's that i know of have good guns and they keep them clean.
