Municipal court. It should be only once day, but still chaps me. I looked at the docket. Dozens of traffic cases and two verbal assault cases.

I'll Show.
I'll do my civic duty.
I'll be pi55ed off every second of the day.
I can guarantee no mercy

Yea, I get paid my 'regular salary" while on Jury Duty, but part of my total compensation is commission on billable hours, and I have a bonus component on total utilization percentage (percentage of all possible billable hours that were actually billed).
Not only do I loose commission on 9 - 10 hours of billable work tomorrow, but if I did not have jury duty mid-week, I would be doing a week long on-site project... instead I get little fill-in jobs all week.
My Civic Duty will take a minimum of $400 out of check...maybe as much as $600. If this causes my quarterly utilization percentage to drop down a step, I'll loose another grand in bonus.

We all need to practice Whoa more.

Don’t go. Problem solved. If you’re that worried about a few hundred lost at work, then hustle more the week before to even it out.

I don’t understand why people lose so much sleep over jury duty. Hell, I want to sit on a jury. I get bummed out when I get disregarded.

I have missed a bunch. I work out of town and by the time I get in I have already missed the date. Been fined 3 times, I think 300 each time. Called and told them and the dismissed the fines.

As someone who relies upon juries for my job to function (trial lawyer) know that your presence is the only reason our American judicial system works. It is an undeniable inconvenience and in your case a loss of earning potential but it is what separates the American judicial system from most other countries. Without juries we would be relegated to trying cases to the judge that can be subject to corruption or influence. The jury system is one small example of the vision for limited government control the folks that established this country had when things got started.

Hey it could be worse, I was put on stand by for Federal jury duty. The whole month I had to call in Sunday night to see if I had to report. The last Sunday I had to show, coat and tie, sat there all day and was called to be put on a panel. We were standing outside the court room when the perp copt a plea. banana

I haven’t been in over 10 years.... wish they would pick me... sit in a climate controlled room for a few days?!?! How do I sign up?

Judges don’t like Mechanics any more than they do defense attorneys....

Unlike many I wanted to do it. Years ago (12-ish years ago???), I lived in Dallas County and got tapped. We had to pay our own parking and never got paid for our time. They kept us until 6PM and released everybody. What a BS zoo. I got tapped again a couple years later and ignored it. Glad I no longer live there.

Sorry it's hitting your pocket book. I've done it my fair share of times. Can be fairly entertaining people watching. Especially in the hallways outside the courtroom. Reality show level drama last time I was at the Commerce Street court building.

It’s a pain, but it’s not called “Duty” for nothing. It’s one of the prices we are supposed to pay as a Constitutional Republic under the 6th Amendment.

Many froth at the mouth going on and on about their constitutional rights but dismiss their constitutional duties like they don’t exist. Jury duty turnout rate is about 20-25% of summonses sent out in most courts.

There are very few constitutional duties - voting and jury duty being the main ones.

I hope no one is in the predicament where they "NEED" a jury of varying opinions and then that jury lacks similar opinions and thought processes of YOU the defendant. With the implant of non-native Texas opinions and ways of thinking so apparent these days, I welcome jury duty and welcome being selected as a juror. The last place I want my fate determined is from a panel of left wing minded jurors. I'm truly sorry other people don't feel this way and consider jury duty an inconvenience to their life. I consider that as one of the most selfish and self centered thoughts.

I never mind doing it when I think there might come a day when I would very much want someone like me deciding my fate.

It also brings front and center the power the average citizen has over judges and attorneys to determine what is justice.

Since Hurricane Harvey the Courthouse I used to be summoned to is permanently closed. So now what was a 15 minute drive turned into "getting" to go downtown. That's what I don't look forward to about it.

Even over established law that doesn’t not quite fit the particular case being tried.
It is called Jury Nullification. It is the most awesome tool a jury has.

You liked the OJ verdict, huh?

“Jury Nullification” is violating one’s oath to follow the law as given to you by the judge.

Jurors decide facts. Judges decide law or “what fits the law”. This is because they are trained in law.

Sorry you feel that way counselor but sometimes the law just doesn’t fit the case or is to overreaching and the Jurors have the power to remedy that for the particular case they are sitting on.

The purpose of a jury is not decide facts. They use the facts presented to them and use the laws at hand to determine a justifiable outcome of the case. Sometimes the given facts do not apply to the law as presented to the Jury.

Been to jury duty twice, got picked once, but they settled before we even found out what the case was about.

My wife went and was chosen and got to go through the whole process on a child abuse case, glad she got to be there, I know at least her part of the decision was on track, they found him guilty as hell.

I don't mind it at all. I have a base salary pay, but work on commission. If they called me every month or even multiple times a year it would probably bother me, but ive been a legal adult for 15 years and they have only called me 2 times... im ok with it.
