Replaced the electronic lock on my safe with and S&G mechanical a few years ago. Got home from the range Saturday and it didn't want to unlock. Tried the combo a few times and finally it worked, figured I was just in a hurry or didn't get it right. Get home to open it tonight and combo won't work, take my time and do it a bunch of times and no bueno. Start to panic a little but looked up a some troubleshooting online and spent a little bit trying different #'s to figure out that my starting # migrated one to the right. No problem right? Except it only works if I bang the door a little every time I stop on a number in the sequence. 4 turns stop on 50, 3 turns back stop on 20 bang, 2 turns back to 15 and bang. Not my #'s obviously. . I can live with that except if it gets worse.

Think I'll call the local locksmith that installed it for me next week when I get some free time.

I know several people w the electric locks, they always seem to act up over time

Sorry I’m no help but I don’t think you’re alone

If I understand this right, you now have the mechanical lock. I had a problem with mine, and a little internet research suggested that if a person spins the dials rapidly, the numbers can drift a bit. So instead of stopping at a certain number, such as 50, it might drift to “50 plus a tiny bit”. That is exactly what happened to dial spinner me, so I used my designated numbers “plus a tiny bit”, andall is well. Took some time to figure out how much a tiny bit was, but I’ve got it now. And I spin the dial slowly now.

I should mention that the tiny bit extra only applies to the last turn of the dial at each number.

Banging on the door and dial didn’t help. I sure tried it.

I’ve read about lots of problems with Elocks but I would’ve figured a manual would be pretty bulletproof

Please let us know what the problem was once you get it figured out

I did spin it until I read somewhere you re not supposed to. I don't use it all that much. I can dial the combo now starting 1 digit off and it won't open. I can do it again 1digit off and smack the door at each stop and it does. Maybe just needs some.dry lube or somethin.

Its not the bolts binding, just the lock not unlocking.

For me, it was a number change of less than a digit. Instead of 50 (for instance), it was 50 1/4. Not a big number drift at all. Beating on it didn’t help at all, though it did make me feel better for a short time.

My first thought was a lubrication issue.

Guess I’ve been lucky. Replaced my safe with a mechanical lock in 2012 for a larger safe with a digital lock. Have had zero issues.

Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

Got rid of my first safe due to this issue. Had the locksmith out to work on my electric lock and he fixed the other. It did it again a few months later....gave it to a buddy.

I wish stupidity was not so handsomly rewarded.
