I got a moultrie 30gal feeder and lately Ive had alot of trouble keeping corn in it. I got it throwing 2 times per day about .75lbs a throw. I got a varmint guard and used bearing grease on the legs. Today I went out and put 80lbs of corn in it and one of the legs all the grease was gone, and the feeder was empty again. I fill the feeder once a month and was wondering whats the best was to keep squirrels and coons from cleaning out my feeder?
I have heard of the PVC trick but I dont see how the spinning would keep them off.

Ive also heard of people making a funnel out of sheet metal and attaching it to the legs. Anyone have any experience with that?

The pvc is too slick for them to hold on too and it spins only a quarter turn and then spins back. Ive never known for this not to work. Hang 3ft of pvc on the leg 3-4 ft off the ground make sure it free spins.

I have heard of folks putting carpet tack strips on the legs that keeps them from climbing on it. Attach them with tyewraps. Let me know if it works.

I've had to do what GOG did. Trapin em seems to be the only real way to keep them off the feeder.

The cone shape blockers on the feeders legs seem to be working very well with a friend of mine on a coon infested lease. 4000 picture with no coons eating corn from the motor etc.

Go ahead and invest in the spintech mechanism. Cost you about $115. I have 3 700lb feeders, I put the spintechs on last year (after I had tried EVERYTHING) and they paid for themselves in the first few months. I was amazed at how much corn I was losing. Good luck.

Regarding the pvc concept. I use it and it works great. The catch is to use large tubing. I use 2" chain link fence post (galvanized)to hold up my feeder and hung 8" diameter pvc pipe 3 ft long. Drilled two holes on each side the the tubing around 1" from the top and fastened the tubing with electrical wire I had laying around to the barrel or leg stands. the pvc pipe hangs by the wire and when the squirrel or critter tries to climb, the pipe moves keeping them unable to catch hold. Do not tighten the pvc pipe to the leg. It must be very loose.

gogbur, that is the first time I have ever seen critters climbing on the pvc. amazing little turds. You might want to use larger diameter pvc. It might work. It does for me.

If you have a sheet metal shop build you a funnel the size of your legs to a 12" round with a screw lap it WILL take care of your problem.

Build a homemade varmint guard of heavy net wire that is feeder diameter, then use self tapping sheet metal screws to bind it to the feeder. If it is farther to the spin plate than a coon can reach, you will rid yourself of coon problems. Had to do that with all my Texas Hunter 300 pounders. Around my protein feeders, trap and kill them.
Nothing hunts like a Spring Gobbler.

This is the only way to Varmint proof your feeders. Ok, maybe not the ONLY way, but it's damn sure the FUN way. Sorry, just looking for ways to keep posting this pic. I'm a proud new Daddy!!!

I've tried just about everything to keep the corn thief's off my feeders, nothing has worked for more than 48 hrs.
I haven't tried the sheet metal cones yet. I made a prototype out of thick plastic, took it to two sheet metal shops. Both gave estimates of $35 - 40 each, I need 12 that's $420. Where did you guys that use them get em made? What did you pay for them?
I haven't tried Spin tech spinner plates. Will they work on plastic barrels? Any place between N DFW and Young county to get them?
Thanks....R

How about an electrical shock fence for cows, they are realatively small and compact and have solar power chargers. You could wrap the wire around your feeder legs or build pens to keep hogs out then shock them too, if your feeders are relatively close you could use one control box and run the wire to another feeder since they power up to 5 miles of wire. http://www.mightypets.com/product.asp?3=699

We have VarmintX - Varmint Guard Feeders from Diamond Feeders that save us 30-40% of corn at the ranch, these things even come with a lifetime warranty. Had big problems before, but now coons have bugged out for easier food! Makes my life a lot easier. Diamond seems to have some other pretty cool new products like the Battery Free Feeder too. Pretty interesting. Check out the link below for the VarmintX. http://diamondfeeders.com/product/varmintx-varmint-proof-broadcast-feeder/
