Looking for a 410 for my 8 year old son. Not looking to spend much over $200. Most of the new ones I’ve looked at are around that price. The reviews on pretty much all of them that I have read say they are hard to break open and [censored]. They say the only thing their kid can do on it’s own is pull the trigger. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

makes a 20ga a .410. When I was 8 I had no trouble using a H&R.

What howl said, or go to a .28 g.. Most single shot .410’s come in full choke, making it very difficult and frustrating for a young child.

I had a bolt action .410 (still have it) when I was a kid till dad got me my Ithaca 37 ultra featherlight 20 gauge at 13.(still have it too) I was deadly with that .410 at 10 years old, killed many dove in Blackland, TX back in the day.

I did a ton of research when my boy was about 8 and I was originally thinking .410 at the time. After reading and talking to folks, he ended up with a 20 GA Weatherby SA-08. Those single shots kick hard, and they're hard to hit with. Can take the fun out of it for a kid. Watching the kids out at the 4H range who are using the single shots, they're just not happy. A few have tried my son's gun and shown up at the range with the same gun shortly there after.

The semi auto 20 has milder recoil and actually gives your son something to grow with. My boy is 12 now and is killing doves and ducks with the very same gun. You'll be upgrading that single shot .410 in a few years anyways so I say go with the semi auto 20.

If you do go with a single shot, check into the light recoil loads.

Thanks for all the advice.
I like the idea of a single shot to start a kid off with. They only get one shot and I think it teaches them to bare down or at least it did for me. I also like that he can keep it broke open and I’ll know it’s safe. He’s ok with the kick and shoots my 243, and 12 gauge on a bench without complaining.
Pretty stuck on a 28 gauge single shot now but having a hard time finding one. Does anyone know a store that carries them so I can put my hands on it before buying it? If not where should I order one and do I need to go through a dealer? Never ordered a gun before.

Would like to get him this gun but having a hard time figuring out how to make it happen. Internet gun buying is new to me. I can’t even believe I was able to get this picture on here.

I agree 110%. I still have my H&R .410 and it did well by me at that age too.

Know one kid that started with a Remingfon 1100 20ga the plug in it so could have only one in the tube like a single shot. I started with a 20ga Ivory Johnson single shot

I only gave my boy one shell at a time. That makes it a single shot. Or shoot low recoil loads through it and it'll become a single shot that way. They won't cycle.

I gotcha. Sounds like it works great for you.

There's one on gunbroker; listed as "rare." It is over the budget in the first post after you pay shipping and FFL fee.

410 is an experts gun. Very frustrating for a youngster. Get a 28 ga or a 20 and shoot light loads.

As has been mentioned already, you can put a plug in a semi that makes it a single shot.

Thank you for mentioning it again. I understand this concept. I’m looking for a single shot break open youth 20 because I like the way I can see it’s not ready to fire from 30 yards away from him and the price is right.

Not in the price range specified earlier but TC Contender or Encore in 410 gives the option of a 22lr or center fire easily change out barrels for more shooting choices

I picked up a mossburg 500 410 at a walmart in Arkansas last year on sale for 89 bucks. The local academy has the same gun for 250 bucks or so. Great little gun.

Savàge 301 single shot at cheaper than dirt for $153. I bought a Hatfield 20 gauge single shot for $99 at Walmart. The one in Denton carries them. They also have them in .410 and 12 guage when in stock. Academy has yildiz .410 for $119. These are well made Turkish guns they seem to work fine.
