Crazy. Some people can own 30.06 AND more modern calibers. Imagine that, a gun safe full of options.

Mr Spomer has come a long ways in the gun writing world since I read one of his first articles years ago and said who is this guy and how did he get a job writing about guns. He got ripped pretty bad in the letters about that one but has since matured and writes some entertaining stuff most of us know that we can just smile and agree with.

Much like I have posted here several times what can the 6.5 Creedmoor do that the old 6.5X55 cannot other than fit in a shorter action

Nailed it!

You know you’re getting old when the list of “hot ticket” caliber fads you’ve witnessed gets this long…

I was just a kid at the tail end of the “magnum craze”, but if you weren’t toting a 7mm Mag then you just weren’t getting it done (at least with the bunch we hunted with!). Happily, I didn’t have to worry about any of that because deciding what I hunted with was real easy: I carried whatever Daddy handed me! Oddly, another 7mm would take the shooting world by storm in ’81…the .280 Remington (despite being badly introduced in ’57 and going thru more name changes than a mobster in witness protection).

We’ve gone thru a whole platoon of Whizzums (WSSM) and SAUMs.

Now we’ve got the 6.5 party in full swing…and that’s fine…in fact, they’re all fine (provided you don’t ask a cartridge to punch well above or below its weight class). There’s precious little new in the shooting world these days (nor any free lunch), but if something gets folks excited and, heaven forbid, attracts new shooters to our sport, well, I’m all for it.

Just don’t expect me to hop on the bandwagon. Heck, every head of game that the She-Wolf has put on the ground with her 30 year old .270 has died ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED that it was a .280 that killed it. And I ain’t sayin’ otherwise.

Mark

clap

I had a customer bring an AR platform chambered in .30-06 a few years ago. I though what a mix of antique, old, and new. It was pretty cool!

What is new about that, other than than that particular cambering in that rifle? It's almost 2019, the M16 has been around since the 1960s. It's not that new anymore.

I have never seen an AR in 30-06 and would be curious to how it works in an autoloader. The 7..62x51 was only invented because it would cycle better in autos. If they have figured out how to make a 30-06 work in an AR, do we even need the 308 win anymore? What's the point?

.30-06 is the antique
AR platform is the old.

.30-06 in the platform is the new. That company also makes one chambered in .300 Win Mag.

And .270. One was for sale here in the classifieds a year or so ago.

They also make one in 338 Lapua.

OK, I get it. I can't believe a 300 Win Mag fits in that magazine.

This is probably a dumb question, but do they make ARs in 6.5 creedmoor yet? I be that would sell like hotcakes. Would the Creedmoor fit in a AR-15 or would it be an AR-10?

Yes they make 6.5CM ARs and they're AR10 pattern.

The 30-06, 300WM, and 338 Lapua are proprietary receivers and mags made by Noreen Arms.

Cool, I'll have to look that up when I'm done with my laundry. I'm curious to see how long the barrels are on them suckers. I've never seen a Lapua with less than a 26" barrel, but that would be weird on an AR.

There's barrels out there to turn an AR-10 action into .243, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08, and others. I'm tempted to rebarrel my .308 into 7mm-08.

My first purchased rifle in 1970 was a Remington 700 ADL in 30-06. I gave it to my son years ago and he still shoots it.. In the back of my safe is my dad's Remington 721 with a K4 Weaver scope on it.in the day this was a top of the line hunting rig.

Great article but I find it strange that he attacks the .308 as if it is the newest fad. It isn't new and it sure isn't the latest craze. The 30-06 will simply do whatever you need done.

Choctaw, I took Spomer's comments about BOTH the 06 and the .308 to be deeply tongue-in-cheek. No flies on either of 'em...or the 6.5's either. Horses for courses and a humorous look at the current excitement...

Of course, I could be wrong. It's happened before.

You are a 708 junky. You got me to try it and it's good stuff, really good, but you might have an addiction. Why would you retire that 308?
