Is a prostaff 7 really any better than a 5? And how do they compare to a Leupold vx1?

I've got a Prostaff 5 in 4.5-14 and it's light gathering isn't close to a 10 year old Leupold VXII I own.

Not what you asked, but it's the closest experience I have.

The difference in the PROSTAFF 5 and 7 isn't the glass. Below is a table that Nikon put out a while ago showing the difference and hopefully it'll answer your question. As far as light gathering, Nikon's PROSTAFF line has 98% light transmission, one of the highest numbers in the industry. It all has to do with the coating/glass used. I recently had a guy tell me his MONARCH 3 was brighter when in actuality it is slightly lower than the PROSTAFF scopes. It all comes down to perception.

Longtime hunter/shooter/fisherman who loves being outdoors. I used to hunt/compete with my son, but he's now stationed in Germany. Never enough time.
