It was hard to switch full time to an AR. I wanted an all around rifle. That I could put multiple rounds on hogs.
I use 6.8 with 120 Sst. 15 round mag.
What do y’all use? What size magazine do y’all take?

I only have bolt action rifles that hold 4-5 rounds. I have used all of them on hogs before with great success. In my area with the tall grass/weeds and thick brush to get more than 2 or 3 shots is rare and 5 is not typical but it has happened on hogs.

But in wooded area. I am not busy playing with my phone is the difference.  I plan for more than one shot by letting the whole group get on corn and then pick out the biggest sow first then keep shooting till they hit the cover. Difference is in cover since I have decent size openings around my feeder pens and feed roads/areas around feeders to keep the deer scattered.

I've killed seven hogs with my .222 bolt gun. Granted, I was on the front porch of our cabin (second highest point in San Saba Co.) and these hogs were under a protein feeder in the 8 acre food plot below the house. Shot one under the feeder, three more before they got out of the field and three more running straight away up the far hillside. All shots were from 180 to 220 yards. How's that for Lee Harvey ? Killed 248 hogs off that front porch in one season. I have an AR but don't hunt with it.

Switched from a Rem 700 BDL 30-06 to a 300 Blackout AR a couple years back to fight the hogs better.
No problems with the 300BO using 110gr Barnes TSX pills on deer, I just have to do my part on placement and down they go.

I use a 300BO SBR for hogs, 260 Ar10 for everything, 6.5 Grendel for everything, not too big on using 223/556 on animals though, though I have killed hogs with it on more than one occasion. Still carry a bolt gun alot as well. Just kind of depends on what I feel like totin that day.

PSA 5.56, .308 Bison 6.8 usually 10 round mags

Both of my boys have used an AR15, the older uses a 6.5CM bolt now and my middle one still uses an AR but I got him .224Valkyrie (73grELD) for this year. Never had any losses with the .223 using 62gr Barnes TTSX handloads and no they are not very accurate, about +1.5''to 1.75'' groups at 100yds. There just easy for a kid to handle and make good truck guns. Still playing the .224 Valkyrie.

I am newbie to hog hunting. Is it that many hogs where you live?

I did once with mine in .223 last year. I had dropped my 30-06 The evening before, and didn't have a chance to sight it in again. I wasn't really happy with the bullet performance. The gun is accurate enough. Since then, I've been loading a different bullet for hogs, and that would work better.

Supressed 6.8 with ARP barrel slingn 120sst's or 95 ttsx's for the past few seasons, 10rd mag with 5 stuffed in it. Switched to my Armalite ar10T w/ 7-08 barrel this season.

Use a 6.8 with 90gr gold dots or 115gr Fusions, 10 round mag. Just finished building a 6.5 Grendel with a 20” barrel that I’ll be trying out this year. Still you use my bolt guns as well.

I can shoot a bolt quickly enough that other hunters ask if I was shooting an AR.
I have an AR but I use the bolt guns more.

Never used an AR for Deer. Hogs all day but not deer. Now if I did have an AR 10 I proabably would.
