Already have my gear list pretty much set up, but I was just wondering what some of y’all’s gear lists look like! Hunting the second rifle season, which is at the end of October, thanks!

Where are you hunting out of?
A lot of what I pack depends on how/where is hunting out of

Agree, also your style of hunting imo. May be easier if you list what you're taking, but it will always vary as some fellas need more than others. After 30+ years, I go lite as I can and usually out all day the 1st couple days, 2-4 bottled waters, game bags, 1/4" nylon rope, couple knives, sharpener, collapsible bone saw, pen, electrical tape for tag, couple spare batteries and rnds of ammo and energy /sugar snacks, couple bic lighters, and several pairs of rubber gloves that can 2nd as fire starter if needed. My pack runs 20-25#'s i'd guess. RF and binos stay on me either pocketed or chest strapped.

Depends if you are actually going to hunt Elk or drive around until you see some. A lot of variables.

Backpacking in & camping out 5-7 days, hunt is next year so we’re still deciding which unit we want to hunt! Where are you hunting out of?

I travel light. Pack frame pack , few changes of clothes, freeze dried food for the trip, jet boil, knifes, stuff needed to hunt, etc The past 3 trips I’ve made I’ve brought too much gear. Gonna dial it way back this next trip

That's a whole different ball game since now you need living wear. I'd still lean to the basics, like tent, cookware you can reuse and clean every meal (easier to pack out any trash too), possibly a small solar charger for a phone in case you need medical, clothing and sleep wear, Plus your day hunting gear. If you have the coin, you should consider hiring a local with horses to haul you in and pick you up, not always cheap, but you will appreciate it on the return and especially if you kill out.

What tent do you run? The one I have now is a little bit on the heavy side and I’ve been looking around to go to a less heavy one. Backpacking in & camping out 5-7 days, hunt is next year so we’re still deciding which unit we want to hunt! Where are you hunting out of?

I went out with a day pack this morning. Here is what is in it:
tripod spotting scope binocular adapter glass cleaning whips ear plugs two knives knife sharpener meat bags water bottle granola bars extra jacket hand warmers ipad
I didn't get more than a few miles from the truck. If I were camping, I would have a bigger pack with more than one water bottle, more food, water filter, tent, and sleeping bag, maybe some soap.

Be sure to have a handheld GPS, very easy to get turned around in the mountains, especially if snowing or in big pines etc...practice putting in your way points at home so it comes as second nature.

Gonna dial it way back this next trip if i'm camping away from the truck I have a one man eureka tent I use. If I have access to a horse, 4 wheeler or UTV I take a 4 person coleman willow pass tent. A lot of this depends on seasons too. I wouldn't trust the Eureka in Snow. The willow pass has been snow tested. The 4 person allows me a Twin Size air mattress (with built in Foot pump) room for my rifle, gear and dirty clothes. During bad weather there is enough room for me to stay all day in there and not go crazy. You need to also be realistic about a "backpacking" hunting trip. its not hard to backpack in far and kill something. What is hard is backpacking way in and getting your gear and meat/hide/head out. A lot of these shows don't show that side of it....they show the guy backpacking into the middle of nowhere, making a kill then all of a sudden they show him packing the head out on a packframe and going back to the truck. You kill an elk bet on AT LEAST 4 trips to get the meat and head out, thats if you debone the meat.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I think the sled might be ok, but I am pretty sure you are not allowed ANY wheeled anything in Colorado public land. And as it has been said, hiking in and hunting is cool as heck, but man you will be hurting getting your elk out. There is a group hunting Dolores right now ( I was supposed to be in it ) Last time I went, we camped at the road and hiked in everyday. That in itself was a chore, but so cool!

That in itself was a chore, but so cool! depends on the area of the forest you are in. some allow ATV's and UTV's under 50', some allow trucks to be driven on the logging roads thru the forest, some allow horses and foot traffic. every unit is different, but I have never heard of a cart not being allowed. I would think its ok and is a pretty handy tool although where we hunt it wouldn't do you any favors.

Agree with txtrophy85 ^^^ each area has a designation, but never saw a restraint on people powered wheels.
Most of the signs I see (at least in CO) say "Horse or foot only, no motorized vehicles", I have helped friends who had carts and in one area I used a peddle mountain bike to get back in there, GW told me he thought that was "ingenious", ...never accused of that before.. He did say it was grey, but somewhat open ended based on what I was doing and he had no problem with it.

Wilderness areas would be the only no no for a game cart. Motorized does not apply to game carts. Mechanized travel is not allowed in wilderness areas, bikes or carts. State lands in Colorado have their own set of rules.

If they pass HR 1349, then it will be allowed in designated wilderness areas, whether it passes or not is still being debated.
