I'm about to come into some money and am looking to invest part of it in a small hunting plot. I'm looking for something no more than 2 hours from Houston. It doesn't to be huge, just large enough for me and my son to make some weekend trips. We're not bird hunters, but would like somewhere with plentiful hogs and enough deer to fill our tags.
I'm curious about the best areas to look at in a 2 hour radius from the city. Basically, we are talking about anywhere from close to San Antonio to the Louisiana border and/or north past Huntsville, so quite a bit of varied terrain. Where can I get the best bang for the buck, so to speak. Looking to spend somewhere between $100k to $200k for the right place.
Right now I have a hunting club membership near Tyler that costs $1,100 a year. That is a bit far for me to get to, and I haven't had much luck in the year I've been a member there.
Anything else I should keep in mind or look out for?

Filling 2 sets of tags from a plot of probably 50 acres is a tall order. But, even a small tract that is your own place is much better than dealing with a lease. Good luck with your search!

Yes, filling the tags is definitely less important than having a place of our own. My son is only 10, and he is happy even if he just kills some squirrels and rabbits. As for me, I enjoy relaxing in nature even if we don't kill anything.

In that budget range I'd look NNW towards Centerville, and WSW towards El Campo, Halletsville.

IF you find something you think might be suitable ------- CHECK THE BORDING AREAS ------ if there are 10 -------- 50 acre tracts you will be unlikely to ever see a deer. The opposite scenario is that it borders a 1000 acre ranch.

I was actually looking at a few interesting listings near Centerville on the Lands of Texas site yesterday. It looks like there are a couple hog hunting operations near there. Might be interesting to spend a weekend there to see the area.

also be sure to look at the TPWD county listing on what can be harvested, some counties have AR and no does unless MLD.

Look at Lavaca county, you should find something in that price range. Depending on where you are in Houston you can make it in a hour and a half on 90.

I am interested in selling a 45 acre tract on the Coast near Seadrift/ Port O'Connor, Calhoun county. This may be on the edge of your distance requirements at about 2 hours south Houston. It is presently a cattle grazing lease 50% open and 50% oak motts and brush. Permanent 8 x 8 deer blind overlooking 2 acre duck pond. Ag exempt taxes and $$ leasing for cattle or let it grow up for wildlife. Good fencing and 25% mineral rights. 3 miles to San Antonio Bay for outstanding fishing & ducks. BUT there are limited big trees making it more open than what you may like. ?? Deer, hogs, Turkey, small critters and lots of ducks. Buildable with basically no county building codes. Just throwing this out there if anyone interested. $4500 acre and I would consider a contract for deed. I just bought a different house today so going to sell this. Thanks for considering.

Thanks for posting, but I don't think this will work for me. The price is at the high end of what I would want to pay for a place where I need to add a cabin / lodging. Location is also a bit on the far end (which would make it even more important for me to have on-sight lodging eventually). And as you noted, I'm looking for something with more large trees and a few clearings. Although the pond would be very nice. This does sound like a very nice property, however, and you should have no problem finding someone for it. At the suggestion of another poster, I took a look at Lavaca county. I'm going out to look at a few properties the weekend after next when work calms down a bit.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
