The wife wants to learn how to shoot a shotgun and would like to shoot skeet/trap during the off-season with myself. I own two shotguns my Benelli SBEll and my first shotgun as a kid Winchester ranger model 120 pump both in which are 12 guages.
I was thinking maybe a semiautomatic 20 gauge however for once I didn’t know which direction to go in.
What guns brand/gauge would you recommend ?
Thanks

20 Ga. semi-auto. I prefer Beretta but there are plenty of other good choices.

My wife is short, 5'2", and she has a Browning Maxus. She likes it and there enough spacers to make it fit well for her. It's a 12ga for what it's worth.
I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

20ga 391 is a great option if you find one.

I'd definitely go 20ga to start. Benellis/Berettas are great. I like my Weatherby SA-08.

Quite a few out there and the gas guns from Browning and Beretta will be softer recoiling than the Benelli.
If $ were no object I would be shooting a Beretta A400 20 or 28 for most of my shotgunning. Then with being on blood thinners and having an internal defib implanted I am looking to reduce recoil. With todays shells that are available I really only grab the 12ga for geese and turkey and will switch next year to the 20 for turkey, TSS is an eye opener for turkey with smaller gauges.

28 gauge, not even close. I'll defer to others who are more up on current offerings. A few general thoughts from having competed with women at a fairly high level in skeet shooting long ago, and taught more than a few since. Most women do not have the upper body mass or strength to handle comparatively heavy or heavy recoiling shotguns. The recoil of a light 20 gauge to her will be comparable to a man shooting a 10 gauge, which is not a fun experience for most. The average woman needs a light weight and light recoiling shotgun to make it enjoyable. If she likes shooting a shotgun and wants to compete, she most likely will transition to a slightly heavier gun. Most local competitions are won and lost with the 410 and 28 more than the 20 and 12, which tend to have perfect scores. So most of the practice needs to be with the 410 and 28. 410 is not great for hunting, the 28 is. A 28 gauge will produce excellent results in the field and on the range as well, and most importantly, be pleasant for her to shoot. There were times when I was a scrawny teen competing and the recoil of even a 20 would wear me down, so I shot my 28 gauge in the 20 and 12 gauge rounds and won tournaments on occasion with a 28 gauge. The 28 is highly capable of keeping up with a 20 gauge at all but the highest levels of competition. In the field, I put more geese on the ground per box with a 28 than others with a 12. A #6 from a 28 has the exact same energy as a #6 from a 12 gauge. The 12 just has more pellets. All things being equal, the 28 has a denser shot string than a 20, so with good shots, the terminal performance can be as good or even better than a 20. The shot string on a 20 is longer, so there is more margin for error by aiming in front and thus some think "it hits harder." The real difference is they may get a few extra pellets on, but a good shot with a 28 will crush a goose, done it too many times to count. Aiming behind is the usual reason for a miss and a 10 gauge cannot overcome that failure. Make sure it fits her very well. Make sure the toe of the butt pad is not pointy and poking her in the breast. I have shot with women that went as far as taking belt sanders to the toe of recoil pads to make them more comfortable and helped a few do it with a pocket knife at the range. If shooting hurts, they will not have fun. Pretty simple, not sure why some men do not accept that. Detail learned over time, have her wear a sports bra, not one of her fancy things things with bows, buckles and do dads. The buckles, bows, and sliders under where the butt pad make contact with their shoulder can causing pinching under recoil. If it pinches, that hurts, which means it is a bad day for her. Make sure it is a good day. Anyway, make it fun and enjoyable for her. Let her try a few options, see what fits, spend the money to buy her at least as good as what you would buy for yourself. 28 gauge is my vote though, by a big margin. 12 gauge is a non-starter. Back from ancient times in my earlier days and the context for my comments.

Budget is important ???
Low, Escort 20 ga semi auto youth model. The shorter length of pull should fit her.
Buy LITE recoiling shells. 20ga can still kick...hard.
stay with a gas operating system, the Inertia systems kick harder (Benelli, Franchi).
Any of the big brands will suit her fine, take her to Cabelas, let her feel a few, FIT will mean if she will ever hit anything with it.

The 28 as jb said is hard to beat...until you have to buy shells for a high volume shooter.
For that reason...I'd say get Beretta whichever you get but I'd lean toward the 20 just because shells are cheaper. Get a kickezz pad for it and maybe even a shirt/jacket/vest for her with the recoil pad in it too.

Rem 1100 Skeet-B in 28 gauge.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Citori back-bored, shoot light AA target loads. Always shoot bottom barrel first.

Fit is far more important than gauge, I think. I'm a big fan of the Franchi's. I've got both an Intensity (12 x 3.5) and a Catalyst Affinity (woman's model) and think they're both pretty slick. For that matter, I've got 3 Beretta 390's, 2 x 12 and 1x 20, and think very highly of them as well. All that said, I bought two woman's model shotguns for my wife ... since she's 5' 9", they're actually too small, so pay close attention to fit if your wife is either tall or short. If you want a good deal on the Catalyst Affinity ...

I got a 28 gauge for my daughter when she started hunting and shooting, yes the shells are more pricey but the time we spend together more than makes up for it. She now shoots it well and enjoys it. 28 gets my vote as well.

I let my wife shoot all mine, they are all 12’s. After an evening hunting, she wanted a 20. I took her to BP, let her handle every 20 semi auto they had and let her pick what she liked. She chose the Franchi Affinity. Fit her good, good butt pad, and lite weight. She loves it

I'd go 28 gauge as well...I've shot more rounds out of a 28 ga than 12 and 20 combined. It's a sweet shooter.

Beretta A400 Excel, I just purchased a 20 gauge with the kick off on it. I love the gun but wishing I would have went 28 gauge instead. Cycles perfectly even with light loads.

I've shot all the gauges except for 10. .28 is by far my absolute favorite. I know the shells cost more, but so worth it.

I think knowing her size would help with recommending a shotgun.
My wife if 5'9" and 150 pounds with long arms. She can shoot any of my guns without a problem. She needs a higher comb height but that is all. Your lady may or may not need a gun designed for a woman.

Agree with Savage243, my wife is pretty short and any gun with a normal length of pull is uncomfortable for her. Ended up getting the Beretta a400 compact lite and she loves that gun.

Buy one that YOU like would be my advice. My wife went on a dove hunt years ago and there were so many birds she just had to shoot up in the air and one would fall. Went to Cabelas for her birthday and she picked out a Benelli Legacy 20 gauge because it was pretty. Love the gun but dang I would have rather had the Silver Pigeon next to it. She doesn't ever shoot the thing by the way.
