And they would both be 30-06! Sight one in for a top speed 150 grain bullet in two types, say a SST and a Partition. Set the other up for 180 grain bullets, the Ballistic Tip and the Partiton. Of course I would still have rifles more fun to shoot off the bench or at coyotes. Is there anything truly wrong with this idea?

Why not just go with one? The 180 SST & Partition will kill everything.

Why not one rifle to shoot both bullets? I’m confused. With the one rifle program you can afford far superior optics. A quality 3-18 scope and knowing which bullet is in the chamber seems far superior to splitting that money between two rifles. Just my thoughts. If you know the dope for two rifles then you can know the dope for one shooting two different bullets just as easy.

Mostly having two rifles means I have a backup if one goes down for any reason. Both already have 2x7 VXII Leupolds on them which is enough magnification for the 450 yards or less I will be using them at and well suited for the usually under 200 yard shots I get. By having them set up for different bullet weights I won't have to sight in again between seasons though with the Partitions either rifle could be used to hunt elk.

I didn’t realize you already owned them. I thought you was selling everything and buying two 30-06s

No just reducing the herd to a manageable level.

Are you sure your rifles will put the two types of bullets you want to use for each in the in the same place? (Just because they are the same weight doesn’t guarantee that.)
If not, you will still have to re-sight in for each bullet type.

Well I could use the rifle already sighted in with the bullet most useful for the hunt in mind. Or if you mean say the SST or the Partition, your right but I could figure out how many clicks it would take to get either bullet where it is supposed to be. Usually in my Springfield it puts bullets loaded with similar powder charges very close together. True I would prefer to shoot a couple to make sure.

Sure. Just saying most rifles like some bullet types more than others, that’s all.

I’m thinking he intends one rifle for one bullet and the other for the other.

He was discussing two types for each.

So logically the rifle loaded with the 150 grain bullet would be for lighter game so I should keep it sighted in for a Ballistic Tip or an SST, fast openers. The other rifle then should be sighted in for the 180 or 200 grain Nosler Partition. That makes more sense. Or I could keep them both sighted in for Partions but of different weight.

It's even worse than that I have a range at my place, I can shoot up to 150 yards any day any time! Last time I went to Wyoming I hunted antelope and elk. I would have had time to sight in with a different bullet but I was busy brookie fishing and visiting the local watering holes between seasons. For a month......

At any rate I tuned and bedded a Weatherby Vanguard 30-06, burned a box of Winchester 150 gr. factory ammo through it and found it nicely accurate. Time to get some loading done to see if I can beat the factory ammo, should be easy enough. Going to start with a load giving 2600 fps and the 150 gr. Partition. A woods load, don't need 3000 fps for less than 100 yard shots.

46.0 grains of IMR 4895 under the 150 grain Partition seconds put ten rounds in 1.4 inches and I put two clicks left windage to center the last 6 shots. Started getting hot out so I call it good.

I have also sold all of my rifles and am now down to just the 30-06. Sort of, have a .223 bolt rifle left over and .416 Rigby for ele. Have a S & B scope with ballistic turret. Loads with 110 grain TTSX are one setting, 150 grain Sciroccos another, 180 grain Scirocco and A-frame another, 200 grain Partition another. This takes care of anything I care to hunt. The light TTSX is wonderful on whitetail and antelope size game. I have not found a better bullet for zebra, wilde, oryx, kudu, elk than the 180 grain Scirocco and I have killed a lot of them. The 180 grain A-frame is an extremely strong bullet and is great on giraffe, eland and also works well on buffalo culls.

The other 30-06 I have is really fond of 180 grain bullets, it is easy to get 3 shotters nearly touching but it shoots 150 grain bullets generally a bit over an inch. Like the Vanguard I am fooling with.

Well when I whittle down my bullet collection I will sell some of them. There is no doubt my heirs will end up with some.
