Salt Lick in Driftwood was very good,in my opinion. Stopped in at Cooper's in Llano a few days ago. Was very disappointed after hearing how good it was. Brisket was much too salty for me, and I love salt. Nothing there impressed me.

Head to Stanleys in Tyler and hit Mike Andersons on the way through Dallas. Stanleys brisket is top notch, I get extra bark; their sandwiches are good as well, the motherclucker Cadillac style, in particular. Mike Andersons jalapeo cheese sausage is the best Ive had.

You cant have a BBQ road trip without going to Muellers in Taylor, Texas. Muellers is one of the best in Texas. Splurge and get the beef rib.

Bodacious in Longview (the one on Mobberly) is a great destination bbq place. The Pecan Lodge in Dallas is really good (great sausage). I want to try 407, Snow's, Cattleack, Killen's, Micklethwait and La Bbq.

Don't believe all the hype about Truths Bbq in Brenham just drive on by Texas Monthly made their BS reviews because of big money backers
Truths owner Botellos partners are restaurateur Johnny Carrabba (Carrabba's, Mia's Table, Grace's, Common Bond Bakery) and private wealth manager Jason Fertitta.

Ate at Kreuz in Lockhart really disappointed, next time I will try Blacks. I really enjoyed Coopers in Llano that was 15 + years ago ate at Saltlick about 20 years ago it was good then.

You dont see it as much these days but twenty years ago I would advise you to take back roads and stop at every roadside pit you see. There were some good cooks on the side of the road back then.

Make sure you go by the Shed Market in Abilene! It is relatively new but sales out of BBQ everyday. They only use USDA Prime brisket. The operator grew up in an old TX classic called The Shed in Wingate. It is phenomenal!!!

The operator grew up in an old TX classic called The Shed in Wingate. It is phenomenal!!! I stopped in at The Shed today at 5 hoping there was some brisket left still. I wasnt disappointed! Got a 1 meat plate with moist brisket to go. Potato salad was fair, cole slaw was spicy with minced jalapeo. The brisket was excellent. Thin bark with lots of seasoning. Folded some meat in a slice of bread, no extra seasoning or sauce needed. Ill be making a return trip. Theyre located on Buffalo Gap Rd on the right, just past fm 707 headed toward B Gap.
