Thanks for all the info/posts. When I first started ducking hunting 2003 season, I bought a wood SureShot duck call, but I did not get serious about learning how to blow it until a couple years later, and I got pretty good at blowing it (for a rookie ). But seriously, I had many veteran duck hunters tell me I sounded pretty good with it. But then I lost it. Then I replaced it with RGC duck call, and I never could blow it well, I could do a nice feed call with it, and an ok quack, but my comeback/highball pretty much sucked. It was just me, because others could blow it well, JJ tuned it for me at Cabela’s last year, but I still sucked with it.

So this off season I said I’m going back to my sureshot, so I ordered one, and I could not remember the right model I had before, so I just kinda guessed, but I could not blow that one either , so I took it back. Then I got (just a month or so ago) a $17 Haydel’s doublereed DR 85, and man I love that call, I can blow that real nice.

So maybe I should just stick with that . But I been looking at the RNT calls and would like to get a nice call. I was planning on going to BPS/Cabelas and trying some out, is the reason I was asking about them.

Guy,

The DR-85 is a "great" call... I used one for years...but then, moved on to "nicer" calls...Get good with the Haydel and then move up to an acrylic call that you can work...

As always, feel free to holler if you have any questions...

Take Care,

J.J.

This is true. Way back when J.J. used to invite poor little me to go hunting with him I witnessed it.

I had the expensive RNT's and stuff and J.J. pulls out the old DR-85. I'm thinking to myself, what?

Then the first group of ducks showed up and he ripped a hail call on it. I then proceeded to tuck my calls inside my jacket!!

Darn right it was. I'll never forget it. Getting 4-wheelers stuck in quicksand, making our brickers cough up their 16 ft. trailer for the weekend. Ha Ha

And then the finale was a tornado of greenheads landing in our lap. I'm over there trying to fish shells out of the bottom of my bag and you're at the water's edge swatting greenheads like flies.

The biomass of mallards on top of us was unreal. I've only seen that on videos.

To the other guys, there were literally hundreds of mallards in a duck tornado coming in on us. We were set up on a pothole no more than 10 ft. wide and 20 ft. long. It was unbelievable. It was one of those deals that every duck hunter dreams about. Thanks for the good time, my friend.

Yeapers!!!!!!!!

I had forgotten about us using the brickers trailer!

Hundreds upon hundreds of mallards droppin in out of the sky...Yeap...I will never forget that!

Self-defense I tell ya'!

But seriously...that was an awesome hunt the whole way around...

Remember running into Byron (forgot last name) at the hotel...the varmint hunter....That was cool talking to him.

Anyways...good memories.

Nice callin JJ. Does Texas have a "meet" calling division like some states do?

Well, seeing that the last time that I competed in a competition was 2006, I think I did pretty good!

Man the nerves got to me bad the first and second round...

Ended up that there was 14 contestants total...typically there is 2-3 that have "NO-Clue" what they are doing...but this year all 14 were true callers, and knew what they were doing...

I could have done better, but I am satisfied for how I placed...only missed 4th place by 3 points...and in the third round I was only 2 points behind the winner!!

You should do it every year bro! I may do it next year just to give you a run for your money on my DR-85.

There is a few "Meat" contests that are held in Texas...but this competition was a "main street" routine.

Guy- food for thought, I placed 5th in the State of Texas in 1998 with a DR-85

Texas State Sanctioned Championship Duck Calling Contest 05.09.2009

10 of the 14 callers for the Tx State used RNT Calls.
RNT-MVP ($125-140.00 call) has been used by one of the First Place Champion caller (won 4 times)of Tx State the past 9 years. I don't know which RNT he used this year.

10 of the 16 Contest callers for the Gulf Coast Regional Sanctioned Calling Contest 05.09.2009 used RNT. (1st - RNT, 2nd- ECHO, 3rd - ECHO, 4th - RNT, 5th - RNT.

Sometimes we have had Duel meat calling contest for fun at the Tx State and Gulf Coast Regional $20.00 each and the winners take all.

You can go to http://www.CallingDucks.com to see where some meat calling contest are.

Clint was using an MVP that Butch put together for him...

He was suppose to blow an Echo but changed his mind the day/night before...

He and I talked about it at the contest.

Long story short...he was suppose to blow an Echo...

Like I said, Rnt and Echo calls are "very" good competition calls, and have won many contests...but there is several others that are "very" good as well, like Betts and Buck Gardner....

Thanks for the post Duckcall!
