Well, seeing that the last time that I competed in a competition was 2006, I think I did pretty good! Man the nerves got to me bad the first and second round... Ended up that there was 14 contestants total...typically there is 2-3 that have "NO-Clue" what they are doing...but this year all 14 were true callers, and knew what they were doing... I could have done better, but I am satisfied for how I placed...only missed 4th place by 3 points...and in the third round I was only 2 points behind the winner!! Put my 3 rounds on video and got a few pics... 2009 TX State Duck Calling Contest Thought I would share... J.J.

Cool deal! Your routine got better each time. Which call were you using? I know you've got a few.

Marty, I got a Kryptonite Monday before the contest, and practiced only 3 days before the competition... With a little more practice I know I coulda done better! Thanks, BTW! J.J.

Where was this...I get it was last weekend? Who won...anyone noteable there? What could you have done better? I really don't know enough about it to comment on what was good or what could be improved. It all seems so subjective...I can't see how you could judge a group that has a lot of really good callers.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

Monty, still workin' on the house...(the never ending story) Marcstar, You can see the results here: 2009 Tx state winners The people that placed ahead of me have all called in the World's competition...except #4 and he only beat me by 3 points out of 3 rounds...(I should have beat him) Kevin Borowski and Ward McGee are very good and I have competed against them for about 6 years... As for what I could have done better... I bobbled, had off notes, lean notes, and the routine in the first two rounds didn't flow good. I need to get more top end, less low end, and more on the triples... Then I will be in the money. J.J.

Competition calling and "real" calling are TOTALLY different!

Duck calling competitions like J.J. was in are so guys can show command over their instrument. Hey, it has a reed.
They also have meat calling competitions that are more like what you're used to.
I think we should all take a video of ourselves blowing a duck call and post it up here for public opinion. Marcstar, you go first.

I think that Ward guy was our goose guide down at BP outfitters like 3 or 4 seasons ago. I remember someone telling us later that he was a calling champ.
As for posting a video...shoot..no thanks...I'm certainly no calling expert that's why I asked those questions of JJ. I think it's pretty interesting though.
The whistle comment by Garrett was an inside joke...and a funny one. We somehow met this guy that was a crazy good caller...he got invited on a hunt...we found out he was kind of a fraud...one of the red flags was when he asked me to teach him how to use a whistle to call ducks. I think I just looked at Garrett with a WTF look on my face. Dude could flat out blow a duck call though...craziest thing ever.

Marc, Yeap that woulda been Ward. He is a good guy, and a great caller... Honestly if you want to get better calling...video or audio record yourself...and play it back... It will help you dramatically. Honestly I sounded better on video than I thought that I did when I was blowing in the routines... To answer the question about contest calling: It is a "performance" the duck call is a musical insturment...(I don't think anyone will disagree) The contest is based on calling in a flight of ducks, then they are about to leave and you call them back and then set them down... Here is more detail on the competition: Quote:
Contestants are required to demonstrate 4 calls (hail call; lonesome hen call; feeding call; comeback call) within 90 seconds. Judges are instructed to allocate up to 20 points per call and 20 points for the overall routine of each contestant for a maximum total score of 100 points. The announcer will ask the caller if he/she would like to warm up. After the optional warm-up, the announcer will say “caller # __ calling for competition.” A red light, in plain view of the caller, will go out when the contestant begins his/her calling routine. The red light will come back on at 80 seconds, indicating 10 seconds remaining, and the contestant must complete calling before the light goes off at the end of the 10 seconds. Half of the contestants (those with the top scores) will be invited to “a callback,” which is conducted the same as the initial round of competition. The 3 contestants (or more, depending on the point spread of the contestants after the initial callback) with the top scores, are invited to compete in the second callback. A third and additional callbacks may be held to break ties for the first 3 places.
Like with anything it takes a lot of practice and skill to compete, place and or win one of these competitions...
Hope that helps...
J.J.

I see you were using a Buck Gardner and everyone else was using RNT, what specific call did you and the rest use. Just curious, I was thinking of pulling the trigger on a nice RNT this year.

Most guys that blow RnT use the MVP in competitions. JJ blows BG calls cause he is a pro staff member for them. It's been a while since I was around the comp guys but 99% of them either blow RnT or Echo. I Do not like RnT duck calls much, personal preference. Maybe you can ask Randy to make you a call. If you do want an RnT let me know and I will see if Butch will discount it for ya.

Guy, I have a RNT call that sounds really nice and easy to use, however it is loud as hell. I only use it on big water or extremely windy conditions. Don't know if you need to shell out the 200 bucks. Just my .02. On the other hand, you may be getting ready for next years competition.

Guy,
1-4 were using RNT MVP - Clint- blowing a call specifically tuned by Butch Kevin - MVP he has had for a while...(I think Butch worked with it also) Ward- MVP that John Stephens had custom made...there is only 10 of them made. Brooks - MVP that Butch made for him
I was using a Buck Gardner Kryptonite that Brittany Sorensen built for me...
RNT, Echo, or BG calls, are all good comp calls...
Lots of people blow an RNT, part of that is that they have been around for a while...Echo secondly...and the Buck Gardner comp calls have only been around about one year...
If you are to ask me...give it a few years and you will see more BG comp calls at competitions...
Also, give me a year to work on my call, and practice and I will climb up in the rankings...
Two things that make a good caller: #1 the ability of the caller #2 the ability of the call
With out one or the other and you have nothing...
Hope this helps!
Please feel free to ask more questions!
Oh, and thanks for the compliments!
J.J.
