Hey guys,

Where's the best place to sell a wrecked car around here? We moved yesterday and wife wrecked it this morning. I don't have the time to fix it.

Also, how much is it worth?

2005 Honda element, 160k miles. Strong engine and tranny, brand new Goodyear. Body and windows are all good.

Damaged parts look to be the lower control arm, spindle, sway bar, shock tower, and maybe an axle. Small dent in hood and fender bumber needs realigned probably.

Is there an insurance settlement? Wrecking yard?

Thank You

We had liability on that one. I think the insurance is thinking it's her fault for switching lanes while someone was speeding down the access road ignoring the red light. So everything seems to indicate that the insurance will not cover it.

It's currently at the tow yard in Euless, near DFW airport.

Don't move out too fast on the sale. If there is any chance you can prove the other driver at fault, there might be a (small) settlement for the vehicle's value. Otherwise, put it on Craigslist, it will be gone by sundown, and back on the road within a week with a clean title...

Is it sitting at an insurance auction tow yard like IAA or Copart? if it just sitting at the tow yard owned by the towing company that picked up at the accident scene then you are running a storage bill in addition to the towing charges while it sits there...so get it moved asap to somewhere free while you decide what to do with it. Otherwise you likely will end up trying to negotiate leaving it with the tow company and they will hit with a lien notice real quick too.

The Wall Street Journal calls junk car dealers “the latest victims of the commodities bust.” They interviewed several auto scrap yard owners who confirm they’ve gone from paying consumers $400 for the average car to between $50 and $100. The Institute for Scrap Recycling Industries notes that 50 scrap metals yards have ceased operations altogether. Others have stopped selling cars and are simply stockpiling them until prices come back up.

Have it towed to Honda dealership to get estimate to get fixed. This will be free storage, give you time to decide. And, the value of it wrecked = market price not wrecked - cost to repair, so you will hav that info. And, I’m sure they will give you a wholesale price, another option.

When I got rear-ended in my Vette I took the insurance money and sold the car to a salvage yard...ended up getting more than the car was worth that way. I sold it to a huge salvage yard in Grand Prairie on E. Jefferson Ave. I don't remember the name of it, but there a couple there that buy wrecked vehicles.

Get it out of wrecking yard. More money on that everyday. Get police report and see who’s at fault. Go from there.

I let the insurance company study about that.

+1, when my ex wrecked my Grand Marquis I loaded on neighbors car hauler and took it to my house. Progressive determined other driver at fault so they covered all but did not want to chance a big storage fee. Speeding on I30 service roads is rampant in Rockwall. I see people every day running highway speeds.
