New to the whole bow thing. I've read up on releases and I am wanting thoughts on the brand and type of release. Buckle strap for sure...but what is the deal with spring loaded trigger vs. non spring? Is there a brand that is more durable versus another? TRU Ball fire , tru-fire, Scotts, ??? What are the general pros/cons to a release?

scotts. dont cheap out, I got 2 backups laying in my bag from cheaping out the first two times.
Go to a shop and feel a few. There are two big differences how the release is held to the wrist strap. I prefer one , my GF shoots the other.

I'm still shooting the same release I bought 25 years ago. Buy it once and be done. I prefer a concho style. Get what works for you.

scott or Tru ball... I say buckle no velcro... I prefer the truball short n sweet Yup those two are great. Some of them have gone from the buckle wrist strap to a Velcro strap but you can still order the buckle wrist straps from their websites and pick them up at your local archery shops. My buddy hasn't had any problems with his Velcro wrist strap but a buckle will definitely give you that extra reassurance that it won't rip off your wrist or come undone. I shoot a Tru Ball and it's the same model I have been shooting for over 20 years. Get yourself some bow hunting style gloves with an area for the release to go through. I have ScentLok gloves that have a place for the release to go through. Really worth it during the winter months.

All three brands mentioned make some good releases. Go to an archery store or even Cabela's and try some out. I like the Trufire Edge fold back release in a wrist style but we all have our preferences. That one is a spring loaded small jawed release that is easy to clip into the d-loop. I mostly shoot the 4finger version of the edge, but occasionally shoot some others. I have an old 3 finger release from Hot-Shot release company that was made in Rockwall TX that I bought in 1981 and it still works very well today.

I am of little help since my primary is a Patriot Jr release and my backup is a Scott. I have beat and abused the Patriot for about 7-8 years and will use it till the Velcro won't stick. I use it and clean it and have never had problem for $15 release. But get a good one and get use to it and many years use ahead of it.

I went with the Scott Lil Goose. Kudos to Cody at Longview's Sportmans Outfitters on Gilmer Rd for the fine tuning, restringing, and shooting tips. Great fella and great store to do business with!

I used a lil goose for many years till one day in Mississippi I had a booner walk by in low light. Between shaking and low light and watching an enormous giant buck the lil goose jaws never found my string loop. I bet I missed a dozen times and then when I found the loop it wouldn't stay clipped.
I went to a true fire hook. It's super fast. The hook is much easier to line up compared to those little tiny jaws. My .02

I shoot a spot hogg wiseguy release and love it. It has a buckle wrist strap so you dont have to worry about the noise caused by velcro. Also gives you the ability to flip the release up towards your wrist so you can leave it on without it getting in the way any time you grab something.
Life passes most people by while they're busy making grand plans for it. www.ottfamilyjewelry.comGreat prices on chains, bracelets, and rings.

The tru fire I got is very similar but it doesn't fold out of the way at all. You are best off keeping in your pocket till your in the blind. The hook and buckle are most important to me.

I really like the Tru-Fire, Belt and Buckle (NO VELCRO). Folds back. I like the Single jaw, open hook design. Expect to pay $80.00 to over $100 to really get quality. I put it on at my truck because once I got to my stand in the dark and my release was 600 yards away in my truck! So I always put it on at the truck.

I shoot Scott.I also use it as a back release. Draw hold on target put finger on trigger then pull back on release and it shoots. Cures trigger punch.....

I have a Scott Mongoose XT. I don’t have anything to compare it to, but have been very happy with it.

Easy and silent to latch on and off the D loop (even in the dark)
It took some getting used to... but I like it more than releases with 'jaws'

Scott little goose for a long time. Been very pleased. My strap gave way at the stitching right before a trip. Bought a new one, and then ordered a new strap for the old one. My son is shooting the old one now.

I started shooting the cheap Velcro tru-fire caliper release and never changed
I keep it strapped to my bow and never worry about leaving it somewhere
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
