When will this horse die?
I like .270, others like 30-06, some may even say 7mm-08 or 7mm mag. Depends on how far out you are comfortable shooting and understanding trajectory.

All will work.
From your choices I go 270 then 7-08...
The one that you shoot the best is the one you should buy.

I just got me a .270 winchester, in Remington CDL SF. The .270 winchester is a little lighter in recoil and shoots a little flater then the .30-06 of course this is due to lighter bullet. You can also find way more ammo then the 7mm-08. Either way you can't go wrong with .270 or .30-06. The 7mm-08 is a good caliber, just not that much ammo as the other two. Either .270 or .30-06 will slay a elk any day of the year provided you hit them good.

Guides will tell you that a 270 is considered small for an elk but it will work, they just like bigger bullet holes to get you a kill in case you wound it. Best all around will be 270 but better elk gun is the 7mm08. 3006 is pretty powerful & seems to kick me around too much. The grain bullet alos makes a big difference. Good luck

Give consideration to a 280 Remington. Fantastic mid range caliber with 160gr Nosler Partitions in Federal Premiums.

I saw an article in a magazine one time about calibers used in alaska. They had a variety from .308 up to .338. Supprisingly the most common caliber was a 30-06. For elk the 0-6 has enough power to get the elk instead of chasing him .270 is a good round. Not to sure about a 7mm-08 it is almost the same as a .308. For an all round gun I would go with the 0-6.

+1, this thread will turn into something 3 pages long.
But, get the 30-06.
Or better yet, a 300 win mag.

Of the ones you mention, I prefer the .270. However 7mm-mag would be better than any listed IMO.

X2! Anyhow, I own guns in all the calibers you listed. The 30-06 has the largest selections of bullet weights to chose from, making it a little more versitle. When I go hunting, I grab the one closest to the front of the safe. Its kinda like asking if you like Ford, GM, or Dodge.

Of the calibers you listed, I'd go with the 30-06. In fact I did. I also own a 7-08. It's a great round for deer and hogs. My favorite in fact. But when I've gone into the big woods looking for Elk, I carry the 06. Just too much at stake to risk using too small a bullet. The 06 just has more energy at a much greater distance.
That being said...I'm getting ready to order my "Elk Rifle", and it's gonna be a .280 ackley improved. Just cause that's what I want. The straight up .280 would suffice just fine too.
The .270 is a great round too. There's enough of them out there to prove that 10x over. I have just always gone to 7mm or 30 cal based strictly on available bullet selections. There's just alot more out there to choose from in those two offerings.
Yes, I do reload. So I wouldn't know what's available in factory ammo. Others here know way more about that than I do.

Well, I would use a 7mm Mag. Love them and you can reach out and touch someone.

I recently got one and when I started looking at the ballistics and trajectories of this round I was impressed also. Recoil is quite strong in my opinion, but well worth it when you want to drop a 300lb pig cold at 350-400 yards easy.

30.06 and you should be able to find premium bullets fairly easy (yeah right, just trying to find remington corelokt is chore nowadays).
.270 will work, all it takes is putting the bullet where it needs to go.
708 will work but finding the right bullets might be a pain since you don't reload.
between the choices you given, go with the 30.06!

I've had 2 and sighted them both in. One was a Win mod 70 and the one I kept is a Ruger M77. It is 7# and has a decelerator on it. I can put about 12 rnds thru it with no problems. After that you are asking for a problem. I love it tho, it is good for anything we have in North America. The 338 is the same case as a 7mag. just a heavier bullet. I shoot 250 grains and it's not bad at all.

There are a hell of a lot of elk killed ever year with 25-06, 257 roberts, 257 wby, 30/30...ect. You don't need a cannon to kill an elk. With todays top of the line bullet choices the options are expanding everyday. Biggest mistake people make is always thinking bigger is better... bigger bullet, more distance... ect. Your personal limitations on distance is no differant with a 30-06 then with a 25-06. Seen to many people think b/c the shoot a 300 mag, they can take 300 yard shots all day b/c its BIG, when infact they can't even get the darn thing in a 3 in circle at 100. You don't gain any margin for error points when stepping up calibers... in most cases you increase you margin of error due to the recoil factor. Best advice of those three rounds go shot the crude out of all three and see which one you shoot best with... because in the end the only thing that counts is getting the bullet in the right spot. The better you can handle a round the more confidence and the better end result. IMO of course

My dad bought one for a Caribu hunt and took me to the range to help him sight it in.... I wish I would of been sick that day....

Own a .270 and a 7mm08. Only one rifle ..... choose a 30-06 here's why two pages of loaded ammo from 55 grain accelerator to 125 grain to 220 grain. The other two don't have the same versatility.

I have guns from the 22-250 range to a 300 win mag all shoot good but if i could only have one it would be the 3006

270 would be my choice of the 3 cartridges mentioned. 150 grain Nosler Partition or Barnes X will drop an elk cleanly and humanely. With the 130 grain Hornady SST or Winchester Ballistic tip the 270 is one of the finest deer cartridges ever, easy on the shoulder and drops very little. I have owned and shot all 3 cartrdges and really like all 3, but the 270 is my favorite of the 3.

I am not argueing that you can kill an elk with anything. I have shot cattle with 22 shorts and dropped them in their tracks. I have hunted for over 40 yrs. For whitetail I prefer a 243, and will even use it for black bear. I don't ever advocate the use of a cannon for any wild game. I have seen a nice bull moose shot 3 times, all in the shoulder and lungs from about 60 yds and we lost him. He was able to run far enough to get into heavy cover and we could not find him. 4 guys looking for several hrs. Big animals that can move fast can get lost quick. I don't recommend ever shooting a large animal with a marginal caliber or grain bullet. Large animals need a shock to the nervous system. small caliber bullets, and I don't care how good of a bullet is, will not deliver the shock of a heavy grain bullet. Yes, you can kill an elk with a 223. But (I) don't recommend it. Loose a trophy animal one time and it will change the way you view small calibers for large game. Small caliber is a relative term.
