I plan to be out there this weekend with bow & stick in hand. It's been a long year! However, I'm not hunting in the morning. Game cameras are picking up a lot of activity prior to sundown, a few does in the morning. But will probably sleep in Saturday and try my luck on Sunday morning. Where will y'all be?

On a side - looking forward to trying my drone out for scouting purposes. Hopefully it doesn't spook the deer.

Good luck this weekend guys. If anyone sticks one and has trouble finding it, I have a Catahoula that would love the opportunity to help you out.
Wanting to put him on more tracks, he's done a bang up job for me. No fees inside Montague County, but he does accept tips only if he finds them. Really, its more about getting him more experience, so please don't hesitate in calling.

I'll be out there as well this weekend. Going camp for the first time of the season Friday night and will sit all day Saturday, and I couldn't be more excited.

Las Colinas - You've got to give us an update on the drone scouting

Good luck. I don't think anyone is bow hunting our place. Just got feeders filled but so dang green still and killing hogs.

Thanks Hman. Will save your number. Been a few years since we needed a dog. We are just SW of Nocona. I got a pic last year of a deer with a broken off arrow sticking out of it. Need to talk with our neighbors since he said he shot one and didn't recover but he only hunts twice a year.

Was it an arrow or bolt? I lost a buck last year with a bolt stuck in his back? I'm just east of Nocona lake.

Will also be interested to see how the drone works out as well.

I sat last night just to observe and there were deer moving all over. Nothing moving yet today.

I went but didn't hunt due to other priorities. But, according to cams, dang little showed up at feeders Saturday or Sunday morning.

funny I had good activity all week till Friday night , nothing sat/sun. while in the blind Sunday morning there was some abnormal sound off in the distance line drilling of some sort - only way I can describe it is , sounded like all all night club party with the bass going on.

gotta remember the weather changed from cooler to warmer Saturday and sunday. It was pretty hot compared to Thursday and Friday.

We should see a little cooler weather in another week or so...I hope.

We will be out too.

Random question . What is the ave life span out this way ?what's a "good sized" buck/doe?
My girlfriends family has owned the place we are hunting on for 25+ years but no one has hunted it in years . This is the first year I'm hunting out there and her family gave me the go ahead to set up the place as I'd like. They spend all their time at a lake house now so the girlfriend and I have the place to ourselves

How big is the property? There are nice deer everywhere but many nocturnal and avoid feeders. Quite a bit of pressure most places so they stay out of site unless it is mid day on Thanksgiving day. grin

Our does weigh 75 to 85 dressed and bucks 105 to 120. Pretty average so nothing huge.

Now my buddy got on a 6,000 acre place not far from us by Ringold two years ago that wasn't hunted and they killed huge deer that first year. Many 150 to 175 born 2009-2011. But last year it fell off like a cliff. They killed off the whole mature class that first year it seems and the drought from 2012/2013 is catching up in deer classes being gone. We have a few big ones from last year still roaming though. We have 1,000 acres and I killed the only 13"+ buck last year out of 5 hunters. No doe were taken. Should only get better from here hopefully or we will just keep killing hogs. Taken over 25 since Jan. We are SW of Nocona. i think towards the river is better for bigger deer. Been hunting Montague since 2005.

I was on a spot on another lease just 3 miles away from my current spot back then. Saw 12 deer the whole season so moved. A first time kid hunter killed a 149 inch from the same spot I moved from the next year.... 160 acre pasture. Good to be lucky!

We are SW of nocona about 7 miles. It's only 30 acres. I got two feeders set and 3 cams set up last month and we have atleast 11 different deer hitting them . 1 nice 8 point , a big 6 point, two small 6s, a small spike , 4 small doe ,one larger doe with a young fawn. All are hitting the feeders regularly besides the 8 point.

The only Hog I have seen was two weeks ago but found him dead the following weekend. We are hearing a few turkeys , going to add another camera this weekend to see how many there are.

Been hunting the same ranch for the last 7 years minus last year when the owner passed away. We had a good managed herd killed 130"-150+" deer every year. The owners family squatted on the place last year and charged people to hunt illegally behind the backs of the family. I have 6 cameras out only one shooter buck has been caught on camera thus far. So who knows what was killed off our place last year or if the pressure pushed off the deer. So I figure this year is a rebuilding year. Probably wont even shoot a doe. There are some great deer in this county. We are by the lake. Good luck.

Just picked up a place near St. Jo this past week. We hear there are big deer in the area but so far all we see is a ton of pig sign. It's a mixture of thick woods and open fields. We haven't even had the chance to put feeders out, so we're trying to reserve judgement.

I'd appreciate any insights on the area....deer density, places to eat, stay, etc.

About what we are seeing... Only getting pics from two wireless cams so know I won't be hunting those two stands opening morning. I took a nice 8/9 on opener last year. First time to show at that feeder according to the cam. It's about luck for us up there. Doe are not hitting the feeders now. Guess acorns everywhere.
