I have seen many of you guy's talk about coon proofing a feeder by using PVC. We have cages and they tore them up I need them off the legs. What size PVC do I need and how long ? Thank you in advance for any help you might have.

I have always used 4" PVC in about 3 foot pieces on each leg. Seems to work.

+1, make sure they hang, and will spin on a coon if they attempt to climb it. So far has worked really well for me.

So, they won't work if the PVC is not hanging and able to spin? How would you attach it so that it spins the coon off?

Define what you mean when you say "make sure they hang". I'm thinking about the same thing and want to make sure I do this right.

Slide them over your legs and put a screw in the leg so it cant slide down

If ya'll would go to a sheet metal shop and have them build you some escutcheons built to what ever size the pipe legs are to 14" round about 4"tall out of 24 gauge metal with a screw lap and attach that to your legs this has STOPPED all coons and squirrels from getting on mine. Try it, it is fun watching them try to get past them.

I can have these built for about $20 apiece, and they save alot more than that on corn and frustration.

I just use a piece of wire to hang it from the cage or barrel down to the pvc. Attach by drilling a hole about 2 inches from the top of the pvc. This allows the pvc to spin quite aways around. So far has worked for me.

I guess I have a smart coon. Tired of having all of my feeders emptied and torn up, I tried the pvc addition the last couple of weeks. Before I added the pvc, every night I would have 2 or 3 coons at the top of the legs and 5 or 6 more under the legs eating the fallen corn. After adding the pvc, this is the only one I saw on the feeder in two weeks. But, if one coon found a way to climb the pvc......

As you can see, I attached the pvc (4" diameter, 5ft long) with wire to the top. The pvc hangs real loose and can freely spin, but this one still made it up.????????????

use axle grease on your feeder legs! Coons hate getting their fur messy.

Try putting carpet tack stripes on them. Hang it with tyewraps or selftapping metal screw.

There are a lot of posts about what to do about problem coons. Instead of starting another one I'll just share my story here. Click on the pics to play a 5 sec video from my Moultrie IR50 game cam.

I had a coon problem. The first thing I did was put on a varmint guard. That just gave them something to hang on to... Round One - coons

So, I added PVC tubes to the legs and it looked like I won. Round Two - gogburn

That lasted for two days - Round Three - Coons

So I sprayed WD-40 on the PVC - Round Four - gogburn

Notice the trap in the background... I've gotten five in it so far. Round Five - gogburn

Good Hunting,
Gary

I have 3" PVC over mine. I just cut about 3" off the bottom of each peace, and that lets it spin

I will post some pics of it in a little bit.

The pvc has to be able to spin on the leg. your pvc looks to be stationary on your video. my pvc starts to spin as soon as they put any weight on the pvc. they bust their butt on the ground ok watching the last video it moves. Do you have any video where the coon gets to the top? My coons cant reach the pvc from the ground they have to climb leg 3 ft or so before they get to the pvc.

The PVC spins on the leg, it is held by a chain on the top. If they try to climb from the top side they are thrown off all night long. Somehow one of them figured out he could climb it with his weight on the bottom, which holds it stationary.

I don't think 3', 5' or 10' feet would make any difference, they are able to climb the bare pole all the way to the top.

Oh, and that guy did made it all the way to the top.

Good Hunting,
Gary
