I know there's lots of discussions about this but i thought id open a new one. Well all my life (even though relatively short 19 years) i have been taught not to shoot ammo that was intended to be shot out of the gun. I got a .357 mag rossi for Christmas this year. My dad and brother in law say not to shoot .38 specials which i understand, i don't want a bullet bouncing down my barrel. So... is there a diameter difference? we have .44 mag and .44 special. Why aren't they called .357 specials. .357mag is sho nuff expensive.
Thanks, Kyle

it's ok. same bullet diameter, diff case length. might have cycling issues due to case length but probably not

I always shoot 38spl. in them just shoot the mag load ever once in a while to keep it from leading up in the cylinder. I have a colt that shoots tighter groups with 38+p ammo

Because the .357 is a bore measurement, and the .38 is a case measurement. They are the same, just measured at a different location.

They just probably told you that when you were young and inexperienced. Now you're old enough to know the truth....It don't matter which you shoot.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

Shoot 38's to your heart's desire. The worst that can happen is a little bit of carbon buildup in the cylinder, and you can prevent that by cleaning the revolver thoroughly after each use...

True, lots of match shooters shoot 38spl. If it gets carboned up to much the 357 will not want to feed in the cyl. so keep an empty 357 case handy and have it flared a little so you can clean the fouling out with it.
