Guys I could use a good push in the right direction. I've never really been into the AR scene. I'm more the type to have a rifle built off a Rem 700 into something I want. Now that I am looking and see all the different makes out there, could some of you guys with experience push me in the right direction (Brand preference). I am sure there are some high ends models out there, but I am more worried about staying away from the junk. So if you could give me your thoughts, I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

I'm much like you with the experience with ARs but I bought a Stag Arms a few months back and absolutely love it. Had zero problems out of it. I just put a DPMS Lower Parts Kit into a RRA lower and lookin for an upper for it now. One thing's for sure...once you get one, you'll either want to keep adding to it, or get another one! They are awesome firearms! Good Luck!

Hmmmm...

The top three AR rifles made are the Colt, LMT, and Noveske. Sabre Defence makes an excellent gun as well. Bushmaster,Rock River, DPMS and S&W all make good guns. In that group I'd go with the S&W MP-15. Doublestar is a good gun too and probably the best value there is.

I guess it would be easier to say which ones to stay away from and that would be Vulcan, Hesse, Blackthorn (all the same company) I don't like Century or Olympic either.

dscglf5350,
I may be posting my EoTech 511.a65 pretty soon. I have it off my AR now to try a new scope. I just can't get used to shooting a rifle with both eyes open. It's been to the range once and to the deer lease once.

I purposely bought the 511 cause it's about half the size of the 512 and I wanted a lightweight, compact sight on my rifle. It's essentially a tactical entry rifle. Batteries don't last as long but a set only cost a couple of bucks so I bought extras. I ordered a set of rings for the scope so when they come in, I'll shoot a bit in my back yard and see how it goes.

Everyone listed here is a good name. There are a few I would avoid.... And I would want to either demo homemade parts guns or have a return policy up front, starting to see some with issues on the market...

Guys I appreciate the input. Any out there then seem to have more "problems" compared to others? Feeding issues, etc...?

One of my first experiences with an AR was an Olympic that would not run at all. We were lucky to get 3-5 rounds off without a double feed. It was probably not maintained very well. I then shot a Colt A2 20" HBAR that ran like greased lighting. I was pleasantly surprised at the accuracty of that gun. I never remember the Colt jamming, not once. That was in 1989. The AR rifles of today are generally better than before. The most important thing is to lube them. They will not run dry. The AR platform is the easiest to learn to maintain. I run Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil almost exclusively these days. It stays around a long, long time and it cleans up very well. I used to run CLP but I just like the Mobil 1 better, cheap too. A quart will last a lifetime. Oh yeah, I run 15w-50 Mobil 1 during the summer and 10w-30 or 0w-30 during the winter, works great.

That's the best 1911 lube!

I have seen some screwed up home builds. Springs in backwards the wrong spring in the wrong spot etc. That is some good advice to look one over. If you are not sure get a factory built rifle to use as a reference and compare the two. It is pretty easy to see if the lower parts kit was installed correctly.

Right now, finding an affordable AR may be more of an issue than which brand. In other words, you may have to decide on two or three brands that would be acceptable and take whatever you find a deal on. At this point in the market, you will probably have to overpay greatly for a Colt, LMT, or Noveske (if you can even find one). I have owned two out of the three mentioned, and IMO, the S&W is not a step down. Cabelas in Fort Worth had one S&W VTAC model(awesome) and several bushmasters this morning.

Slip 2000 is great lube for an AR.

God is so good to me.

I like the S&W MP-15 too. They are an excellent value. They have a lot of milspec parts in them. The come with an MPI bolt, chrome lined barrel and a milspec stock tube. I recently picked one up and I like it. A Colt 6920 LE carbine can be had right now on Gunbroker for $1499 delivered. That is steep but it's not bad in today's market. Colt has probably the highest production capacity of the top three. That's why more of the are showing up on dealer's shelves. The Colts are pricey but excellent.

My top four favorite AR

Noveske- hand built/fitted perfection
Colt - Tried and true quality parts experienced builders
LMT - No frills battle proven excellence
Sabre Defence - Accurate barrels outstanding quality

"Slip 2000 is great lube for an AR."

I have heard great things about Slip2000. Most carbine class instructors have gone to it. I think a lot of the has to do with them getting sick of the smell of CLP and other petroleum distillates. I know I hate the smell of CLP! Stinks!

So while my mind wanders around the fascinating realm of firearm lubrication, has anyone ever tried Slick 50? Maybe the stupidest question you ever heard but I got to wondering...

I have heard of people using it. People come up with all sorts of weird concoctions. I know a guy that uses a mixture of STP, Mobil 1 and synthetic ATF! He got it off the internet and he swears by it. It's red and messy. I'll stick to my Mobile 1. My guns really clean up easily with Mobil 1.
