Seems like I always get this question from several friends around the start of deer season.
I'm curious what everyone's opinion is.
If you were going today to buy an over the counter out of the box rifle for deer season, what manufacturer would you buy in what caliber and what ammo would you run thru it to give yourself the most accurate gun?
No custom or semi-custom rifles or ammo choices please.
200 to 250 yards would probably be a long shot to these guys.

I would buy a Tikka ctr , not a light model in 308 or 6.5 creedmoor
308 I would run a Hornady match grade bullet in 168 gr
6.5 I would run a 140 , 143 match grade bullet
These bullets would probably shoot best on average

Blaser R8--- in a 6.5 x55 or 6XC... Honestly almost every barrel I had in a blaser shot better than I could hold it...

How much are we allowed to spend?
A Sako TRG 22 or 42 would be good, as well as an Accuracy International, but these are $2K-$4K+. My TRG 42 was a 1/2 moa shooter for 2200+ rounds in 300 WM.
Basic hunting rifle in the $500-$700 range, I'd say some of the models of Tikka are the first I look at. Anything with a heavier barrel gets my first pick. I'm not a Savage fan at all, but they do seem to shoot very well.

These guys aren't newbies, but they don't own a lot of guns/have a lot of gun knowledge and just started deer hunting a few years ago.

For a "hunting" style rifle, Montana Rifle Company is turning out an improved version of the pre-64 Win M70, which has high quality components and "feel". These run about $1200 in stainless and synthetic. Definitely can highly recommend these.
Tikka are good shooters, but I cannot get past the cheap quality feel of them.
Savages consistently shoot well, but are hamstrung by extractor/ejector reliability issues.
For cheap, the Ruger Americans I have shot, only two a 223 and a 243, have been surprisingly accurate.
The stocks are flimsy, but can be stiffened by adding epoxy to the forend.
Remington quality is inconsistent and that is being polite. Avoid.

Out of the box...as in comes with a scope on it? No on the scope. Talking Remington, Browning, Tikka, Savage, etc guns that an everyday guy would walk into Academy, Cabela's, Bass Pro, etc and buy.

$800 - Tikka CTR 20" in 308 https://shop.whittakerguns.com/product/ss-6662They have the same gun in 6.5 creedmoor if you want a little less recoil and a little less bullet weight. Should still kill anything in Texas with about the same ammo availability and better long range ballistics. But for only hunting and only within 200-250 yards, I'd probably take the heavier bullet of the 308 and call it a day.

Tikka Savage Weatherby Vanguard In about that order. You can spend more and might get a bit better, or not. Spend about the same or more on the optics and they'll have a rifle they can use for the rest of their lives. Now, if you REALLY want to start a thread, ask what cartridge they should get!

IMO , "most accurate " is irrelevant. For the use you described, almost any of the modern rifles mentioned would be more accurate than they will hold in the field.
Have them go to a large LGS and handle the rifles in their price range. Whichever feels best to them will work fine. No need to stress about a different rifle than may have shot 1/2" better groups from the bench.

I agree with Bbear... my top two choices would be Tikka or Savage. Great out of the box acccuracy that will let you hunt or shoot long range with consistent accuracy given good ammo and quality optics. Additionally, they provide excellent customer support which is always good to have in the event something isn't perfect... Oh not to start a huge debate but I'd go with a 6.5 creedmoor given it sounds like they will be using factory ammo, Hornady 143 ELDX to be specific. If they reload, this becomes a different discussion.

If money is an issue, Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor, Hornady Precision Hunter ammunition 143gr ELD-X.

Off the shelf, my Tikka CTR gets the nod over any other rifle I ever owned. That said, it doesn't shoot as tight as my Remington 700 5R Milspec, but I swapped the Remington trigger for a Timney. The Tikka CTR has some great features that make it a great all around hunting rig; 10 rd magazine, 20" barrel, free floated, stock is rigid for bipod shooting..........it's in my truck at this moment waiting for quitting time and a weekend on hogs and dogs.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Christensen Arms Classic or Ridgeline or the Gunwerks RevX. All can be found at Cabelas if price doesn't matter.

Out of the box...as in comes with a scope on it? No on the scope. Talking Remington, Browning, Tikka, Savage, etc guns that an everyday guy would walk into Academy, Cabela's, Bass Pro, etc and buy. Why "no" on the scope? Like others have said, pretty much any modern rifle is up to the task. A Ruger American for $350, another $300 for a scope... bam, you've got a hunting rifle. Not pretty, no bragging rights, but will put meat on the table.

I have 2 Savages and a Tikka CTR 308. They are all constantly MOA or under with a variety of loads. My other Winchester, Rugers, CZs & Kimber require a lot of load development to find something consistently MOA.
The Tikka really shines over the Savages in smoothness of the action and reliability of feeding. I don't own anything that cycles like the Tikka which is why I would recommend it over any other rifle brand I've tried.
