No real good answer here.. My wife has never liked shooting any of my pistols, 380, 38, 9mm and such. Only one she ever liked was my 22. But she shot my 45 ACP Colt Defender and loved it........ go figure??? She said it didn't kick as bad as my other guns. It all comes down to how the pistol fits and how well can she handle it.
By the way, she likes the feel of my Walther P99 and can't wait to see how she likes it... it's a 9mm.

What is she going to use it for? Is it a conceal carry or a a shooter for target? A nice conceal carry is the Ruger LCP .380. Very small and light. http://www.ruger.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=3701&return=Y

Most Women I have taught to shoot have been 38 revolvers, Chief Special Hammerless or a 9mm of sorts. cuple gals really like the 40's and a couple 45's. XDM 9mm and most of the Glocks are winners, however, you will find that if a woman is going to carry it....it has to be a revolver or Double action Sig Auto of sorts...Safety in mind you know!!

It's a phenomenon that only a Defender shooter will believe. I shot one and couldn't rest till I got my own.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

My wife likes her S&W Airweight .32 H&R Mag. Lightweight, easy to carry and shoot. Practice with 32 S&W. She also has a Sig P226, but the little smith is handier to carry. Be careful of the tendency to want a large auto for her. I've been there too. Problem is, the gun stays home or in the glove box. Small lightweight revolvers fit in a purse or pocket better. You will get a lot of macho forum and gun counter advice about the relative stopping power of larger guns, but it don't help if it's not in her hand when the SHTF. Remember the first rule of gunfighting is, "Have a Gun"!
God is so good to me.

A Good small caliber hand gun for your wife? A Smith and Wesson 38 caliber Lady Smith revolver in my opinion would be a good place to start if she is not familiar with handguns and if the gun is going to be used for self defense. http://www.gunshopfinder.com/smithandwesson/smithandwesson36LS.aspIt really depends on what SHE likes. Is she gun savvy? Can she operate an automatic? How big are her hands? What is the gun going to be used for? These are all questions that really need to be answered first in order to come up with a good recommendation.

Another thought from the range yesterday: IF, the wife will commit to practicing on a regular basis, a .22magnum might fit the bill quite nicely. A man in the lane next to me pulled his out. Small, compact and had a decent punch. At cloce range, a .22 will do just as good especially a magnum. Besides, would make a fun and inexpensive plinker for you too.

+1, got the 239 a few weeks back and the wife loves it and can shoot it very well.

+1, a guy I used to hunt with had some 22mag pistol that held 21 rounds and I must say, it was a deadly little gun. I have no clue as to who makes it though.

very good advice, i too would be thinking about a light weight small frame revolver where it could stay in the purse and not at home. A .38 with the right ammo is more than capable of achieving the desired results.

Take her to a range that rents guns and let her choose. Just dont put an Fing .22 in her hands for personal defense. A .380 is as small as anyone needs to go for protection and thats pushing it.

Wow, I just came across this story... just crazy. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=810_1240132649While Im glad the guy used a .380, Im glad she survived and he died. The story illustrates my opposition to small, underpowered rounds perfectly. Would you want your home invader/attacker to be up making tea after you or your wife just put one straight through his head? The .380 is obviously not a reliable stopper. And thats my 2 cents.

I will have to agree with Kelly about the 380. My wife carries one and we load it with high dollar Speer Gold Dots but I still don't have much confidence in it's stopping power. I prefer a 40 at least. Someone else said it and I'd back them up on it. Take her to a range that rents guns and let their rangemaster work with her. I don't care how good a marriage you got, a total stranger can communicate firearm safety better than a husband can to his own wife. Most of em just won't listen to us that well. Let her shoot revolvers, autos, what ever and then let her tell what she likes best. I always like to buy something I want and then let her try it out. worst case scenario, she don't like it and you get to keep it and find her somethin else. It's a shame to have to go buy another weapon.
