id almost decided on the 3006 with the 308 holding in at a close second, i want an all around rifle from varmit to bear, elk or if im feelin crazy a moose (not likely) so is the 270 win enough to take an elk and have any of you done it? also does anybody hunt pronghorn with the 308/3006. i kno there are always those dream shots where theres no wind and u see the trophy buck at 50 yrds but if shot placement was a little off or youre a little farther out than u want to what comes through for you so im asking what youve chosen and if u would choose something else now that uve used it. ive heard alot of people use 25 06 or 270 for pronghorn, a friend swears for the 270 for anything in north america but im not convinced, also is it true the 270 has more recoil than the 308? i kno theres alot of questions here but imo there all important thanks for any and all help, the rifle will be a remington 700 or savage im not sure the model number

My freind took a elk 2yrs ago with a 270 and dropped it in its tracks but i would go with the 06 because you can download or up for whatever walks in u.s.

I have always felt comfortable hunting anything with my 30-06 in North America. An Elk is no match fo a 270 or a 30-06 unless you shoot it in the foot. I do not have any experience with the 308. I have shot the bigger guns out on the range but that is it. My brother in law has killed many big game in Africa and the only one I would want more rifle in my hand with that he has killed would be the Cape Buffalo (big thick boy). I always felt the 06 or 270 were enough for anything on the right side of the ocean. I am sure you will get more advice from people with more big game experience. Many Elk have bit the dust from a 270 and the 30-06.

I have personally seen 3 shot with a 270. 2 with Barnes X 150 gr and the other with 150 Nosler Partition, all needed only one bullet. All 3 were mature bulls and at distances between 150-275 yards. All 3 took less than 10 steps after getting hit. A 270 can and will smoke an elk.

Talent is a gift, character is a decision.

25-06 and 257wby and 270..... Deer, Proghorn and elk!!!!

270 is probley one of the best all around out there. But you can shoot a 338 and put the bullet in the wrong place and it doesn't matter.

all 3 will work for what you want, but the 270 for a moose is on the small side for me to feel confident.

I've killed everything from 20 lb pigs to a bull elk with the same 270. If I could only have one rifle for what kind of hunting I like to do it would be a 308.

I have killed many, many N.A. pronghorns with my grandfather's 1903 chambered in 30-.06. I think I post about once a week about why the .06 is better than the other rifles mentioned. You can use sabots for varmints, 150 grain for deer and antelope, 180 grain for elk, moose and even a bear. I love my .243 for varmint and antelope, but if I could only keep one caliber it definitely would be the .06, it is just versatile. I am not knocking the .270 or .308, if they weren't any good they still wouldn't be around. They are both great calibers, they just do not have the all-around versatility of an .06. Also, .06 bullets are everywhere. I posted yesterday that I think they even sell them at McDonalds.

I love the 06 also.

But the sabots you mentioned for varmints are not worth a velvet painting of a whale and dolphin gettin' it on!

The experience I have with those things in the 30-06 is horrible. They are just way to damn hot for a 30 caliber rifle. Not accurate in the least bit. JMO

It has been a decade since i have used them and all I remember was that they were not cheap, but tey shot OK. However, I was shooting at 150 or less, too. You are prolly right!

I have taken elk with my 270 with no problems. The outfitter I used said that 270 was the smallest caliber he would permit to hunt elk. I think other outfitters are like that also.

The 270 is still considered the premiere hunting rifle for the North American Continent. Year after year it comes out on top, granted with the recent improvements to others, it is by less and less but it still comes out on top. Use the 270 and hunt anywhere in North America my friend.

popularity wise 270 and 7 mag are probably the top 2 elk guns.

I have a lot of rifles but I don't have a 30-06. As it pertains to most north American game I use one of 3 rifles. I got a 270, 308 and a 338 win mag. I have killed moose and brown bear with the 338. have killed moose and black bear with the 308. have killed whitetail and black bear with 270. I would not hunt elk with the 270 but that is because I have the 338. That said, I would be hesitant to use a 270 on elk, and that is my opinion. Placement is the most important aspect, I just feel that the 270 is too light of a bullet for large boned game. If I were going to buy and only have one rifle it would be the 30-06. As has been said before, you can load or buy loads for just about anything as it pertains to the 30-06.

30-06 is probably the most versatile round out there. I handload my 30-06 and can load from 110grain for varmits up to 220 grain for really big game. I can load them light or heavy for each application. You are pretty limited on what you can load up with the 270. Nothing wrong with a 270. I just wouldn't go out west with it. Can't say anything good or bad about the 308 as I have zero experience with the round.

You can and it has been done. In fact there is a well known writer who actually took an elephant with a 270. That doesn't mean that you should go out and try to kill anything and everything with a 270. As an ethical hunter, I believe that you should try to use a caliber that will adequately kill the animal you are hunting as quickly and with the least chance of the animal being lost due to fleeing far enough away from the point of impact. Doesn't mean that you gotta use a cannon but a 135 grain bullet is pretty light for an elk. If you hit him in the shoulder and the bullet hits the leg bone right, it can wound him enough to kill him but he may run long enough for you to never find him. They can be tough to put down and the last thing you want to do is hit one and then lose him. Trust me, I've lost one large game animal and it is not something that I ever want to go thru again. As I said before, yes, you can kill an elk with a 270 and if thats the only rifle you got and can't afford another larger one, then by all means use it, but if you are looking to buy a rifle for all around north American game, buy a 30-06. It is an issue of ethics. Kill it quickly and effectively.
