My breeder just emailed me this morning and said that the puppy I am supposed to pick up in two weeks has an overbite. She said that this disqualifies him from breeding/showing, but haven't decided whether I am going to pass on the puppy now or not. Has anyone had any experience with this in their dogs or have opinions on it?

If you don't plan on using at stud if a male or raising pups if female it really doesn't matter as far as performance. Most bite problems don't cause any appearance problems either. So depends on what you hope to do with the pup.

Not going to change how much the dog will love you and your family so it wouldn't even be a decision for me. I guess that's why I'll never have fancy bird dogs.

What worries me is the dog having issues holding things in his mouth from it being sore. Not sure I want to get him and just hope he never has pain. Would be a lot of money and time down the drain if it got to that point.

I've got a friend with a lab with a bad overbite. I don't think it causes any pain, just some excess drooling and a little difficulty picking up larger birds sometimes. Like others have said, I don't think it's a huge deal unless your looking for a trial or show dog. For an average meat hunter it shouldn't be a big problem.

I would pass. Too many great healthy puppies out there to buy a potential problem. Unless the breeder is significantly discounting the dog.

It would depend on what you had planed for the dog, and how bad the overbite is.
Not many, but some have to have teeth removed, as they puncher the top of the dogs mouth.
I also wouldn't pay the same price, if a dog had a overbite.

Decided to pass- I really like the breeder so I'm just going to wait for her next litter.

We had a dachshund with an over bite, vet gave us the name of a doggy orthodontist
Kept that mutt till the coyotes had him for dinner. I've hated coyotes ever sense loved that little guy.

My lab has a slight overbite, never bothered him. He is 9 years old now.
