The only way things could have gone much better would be if I recovered all 8 hogs, but the evening started off with me finding the landowner sitting in a lawn chair with a scoped rifle, watching the oats field...in case any hogs showed up before I arrived. It has been several months since I have been to this property and he, gave me the overview of what had been going on, where the livestock was, what was planted, etc. He wished me "Good luck" and left me to hunt. I have multiple fields to watch and knew I was going to be mobile much of the evening, but I had no idea how true that would be. The action was ongoing. As soon as I returned from one hunt, I would spot hogs and be off again.

Only 6 are shown recovered. The landowner found #7 this morning.

That was an awesome hunt, and the average weight was impressive. Great shooting.

I went out for a few hours Friday and Saturday and didn't see anything, so you gad a much better time than I did.

Nice going! Better buy some more Mountain Dew — sounds like Angry Bird gets thirsty on those late-night hunts.

Keep knockin' 'em down!

Wow that is some serious hog problem! Good shooting. Is this in Montague county?

DNS are these actual weights or measurement estimates? If measurement then which method are you using? I know of at least two and they give totally different weights for the same chest measurement. I will have to do some measuring on my next pig to see what method is closest to actual scale weight.
Good job by the way.

I use the heart girth weight estimate. I have tested it personally on over 30 hogs. Texas Lawman has done well over 100. The rounded off numbers just simplify the estimate as an estimate. I don't usually worry about increments that would be less than 5 lbs. I pull the tape taught behind the shoulder at the arm pits and repeat the procedure to find the smallest circumference possible and that provides the measurement.
http://www.thepigsite.com/articles/1106/use-heart-girth-to-estimate-the-weight-of-finishing-pigs/

You can use their math with all the digits or use the simplified field methods of inches times 10 and then subtract 200. So a hog that tapes at 40" is 200 lbs. Their math would have it come in at 201 lbs. Their math is technically more correct, but it is an estimate. The results are consistent within their prescribed error rate and I have found them to be even more consistent than that. I can only recall being off by more than 10 lbs twice, once by 12 lbs and once by 15. For all practical purposes, the method is considerably more accurate and certainly more reliable than eyeballing, lifting, or dragging estimate which a lot of people use to proclaim weights.

Here is a hunt where I took a fellow THF member along. This was the same property. We shot a large boar and then the landowner drove up as we were considering our options for hauling it out of the field. He was a little skeptical when I said the hog taped about 320 lbs. So we put it on the scale. It scaled at 322 lbs. This sort of result isn't atypical.

You MUST tape properly to get an accurate assessment. That is true for any tape estimate method you use.

With that said, heart-girth estimates have been worked out for a variety of animal types, particular domestics, but also some wildlife and are used by biologists and veterinarians for making assessments in the field.
