I bought a Savage Axis with Acutrigger in 308 to use as a "walkin around" rifle. I was considering cutting and crowning the barrel at 18 inches to make a handy carbine oout of her. Anyone have any experience with short barrel 308s? is that barrel length too short?

How long is it now? 18" is plenty of length, you could even go down to 16.5" and be legal. If you are thinking suppressor in the future and the barrel is thick enough, you might as well thread it when you cut it.
I cut my .308 from 26" to 20" in order to put a can on it fulltime.

The only negative performance you will cause is a lower muzzle velocity. You can gain some back by going with a lighter bullet and a faster burn powder. Cut it shorter if you want to.

I agree with Fireman. I would suggest reloading with fast burning powders to reduce muzzle flash. Your velocities will probably be at the .300 Savage level, but so what? The .300 Savage was a high powered cartridge for about 50 years, suitable for elk, moose, etc., until we "learned" that it took a .340 Weatherby to kill anything larger than a whitetail.

Have 308's from 22 down to 16.10, the 16.10 is a pleasure to have in truck or tight spots, it is loud but there is a cost to everything you do. 18-20 inches would make a good walking rifle IMO.

Just for reference.
16" .308 Win +10" suppressor, AR platform.
155 gr Sierra Tipped Match King Federal 210 IMR 8208 =2600 fps MV
Being a bolt action, yours will make more velocity. And if you go with a longer barrel, that too will make more velocity.
