Quail season starts Saturday, October 30, 2004. Where is everyone going? Bird dog, Gunner and I are headed to Plains, Texas to hunt blues and bobwhites. Weather forecast looks decent for that area.

I'll be staying in this weekend, but hope to be out next. Bro-in-law is going. I'm waiting for a good cold front to poush the snakes into their holes.
Female got bit last year...don't want to go through that again.
But I'll be out Snyder/Gail way...ASAP.

We should get together and talk bird dogs sometime. I work the Snyder area frequently and know several people from there. Let me know sometime, maybe we can hunt or something. Lots of birds south of you around Colorado City.

How did you guys do? We did not mess with shooting any as we were deer hunting and did not have dogs, but saw quite a few birds.

Mud--I'd like to get together. What kind of dogs do you have?? I'll be hunting with Dad out near Gail on Friday, then up to Lubbock for the TECH game.
They went out this past weekend without the dogs. In an hour and a half, they got 20 birds. Said they've never seen it as good.

CoyoteLL, we will be heading out to Paducha end of December or first part of January. Would be glad to have you join us. We have been working out the dogs a little more with the cooler weather.

I have a male two-year old Weimaraner. Great dog, but still on the learning curve. I used to have Brittany Spaniels and loved those dogs when I lived on the Plains of Texas. Weimaraner's parents were featured on ESPN2 several years ago with Jack Youngblood and dog breeder/trainer from Hamilton. He is not there yet, needs lots of birds and hunting to get there, but improves with each hunting trip.

Quail season opening day and Sunday, I hunted Plains and Seminole, Texas. Poor dog working conditions with little breeze, very dry and dusty. Dog worked good for the first three hours, then I put him up due to heat and lack of moisture. Limits on both days, but I will admit, I had to work much harder for them than I anticipated. Birds are there, but according to rancher friend they have had in excess of 40 inches of rain in the area when a normal year is 20 or less. Tumbleweeds and weeds were green as a gourd and were 4 to 6 feet high everywhere. Weed growth was tremendous, hard for the hunters, but excellent for hiding the birds. Conditions will get better as it cools off.

Quail hunters in the Abilene vicinity, if you would like to work a bird dog on your hunting area, contact me and we will see if we can work out a time and place. Dog is not perfect and needs work to get better.

I've done alot of quail hunting up near Roaring Springs. Lots of good birds up that way. Our hunting dogs, 2 German Shorthairs, stay out in Lubbock...Dad has been running them, as they tend to get lazy during the summer heat.

I have a friend that had a city dog Weimaraner. Wild dog that loved to run. We've had the same problem near Snyder. Weeds are thick, and our dogs are too keen on retrieving. Have to watch closely where the birds go down. Hopefully with the snow in the panhandle and the cold fronts, the weeds will lay down.
Gonna have a action-packed weekend with quail and deer season upon us.

You can see in this pic how thick the weeds are. Great weekend of hunting...lots of birds out there for everyone.
She had a covey of 25 or so pinned down here. Held long enough to walk up from 30 yards, get the camera out, take a pic, put the camera up and get a double.

Our male was solid on this one as well...
