Now I keep seeing this brought up from time to time, and just wanted everyones personnal thoughts on the subject.

I know that there are several parameters involved here, deer population densities, terrain and vegitation density/sparsity, overall hunting pressure in the area, hunting method; stand and feeder hunting, spot & stalk, driving senderos in a high seat rig, etc.

Having been thru or hunted in most areas of the state, I have a fairly good knowledge of what hunting conditions are like in most areas.

My question is, How much land can 1 hunter, effectively hunt?

I always hear 100 acres per hunter. I think in most cases that gives the error to safety too. But I hunted a 480 acre ranch in Brady that has 9 stands on it and the way it is layed out through the hills it was great. I agree that there are many variables.

as far as the hunter the land ratio, i have hunted area were you could run a hunter to 25 acres, and area's so spread out that i was 1 per 300 acres.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have always heard the 100 acr rule too. I hunt on 320 acrs. There are 5 of us but only 3 of us hunt every weekend. The other two are there about 50% of the year. We hunt in Bronte, TX. Real thick with cedars and we hunt on the ground. So can only cover about 50 to 75 yards.

100 acres Poor deer don't have a chance.
I did call a guy about a lease a week ago that was running an add in the thrifty nickel. He had 160 acres for $430 and told me that if I wanted the lease, I would have to take it unseen. But, the big kicker was that there were 10 spots! I was speechless. Who in their right mind would take a lease unseen with 10 people on 160 acres. And everyone expects to shoot a deer?
The lease is about 25 miles South of Abilene by the way. You can see the add in Abilene's thrifty nickel online.

Everyone wonders why the state is implementing new regulations......go figure.

It depends MarkE.
You can't measure all areas with the same gauge.

But it's one of those:again...

Wow, that's unbelievable! The only place that might work would be inside the Calliham Unit at Choke Canyone! LOL

What's even more unbelievable is that there will be 10 idiots that sign a lease agreement with this greedy JACKA$$!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Yeah, the 10 hunters on 160 acres is a little crazy, no doubt.

But it depends on where you hunt as to the 100 acre/hunter premise.

Call the guy. Just go to thriftynickel.com and do a search in the hunting category in the Abilene area.

I believe you marke. I've heard about things like this happening to folks. I've even heard of a thief being so bold as to meet a victem at some property and showing it to them.

Out here, west TX, rule of thumb is no more then 2 hunters per section. It comes out to 320 acres per person. My old lease was 1 hunter per section. It all depends where one hunts, more deer more hunters ect.

it has more to do with deer density and cover than anything else. you want to be spread out enough not to intercept deer going to another stand

I wish I had that link to that ebay add I saw last week. Some idiot in Wyoming was leasing 1 sq.ft. of land for the winner to have until something like in 2008 to hunt or do whatever they choose. Sad thing was, there was actually bidders on this and the total amount of acres on the ranch was something like 850 ac.

Down here in Texas, I'd say about 1 hunter to 100 acres would be sufficient. Personally I would want more than that if you were hunting with rifles.

Sounds like a lot of people are 'wrong-headed' in their way of thinking about it. No offense to anybody, but it's not about how much space one needs to be SAFE, it's about how much space you need not to all be hunting THE SAME DEER! 100 acres is a scant peice of land when you're talking about deer movement! Especially small considering the distances bucks will travel during rut time!

I think the acres/hunter ratio will continue to go down as people look for cheaper leases, but the best hunting will be on a place that has more like a couple or several hundred acres per hunter-no matter the terrain!

As stated it varies tremendously with the terrain and deer and brush density.

Also what Pyledriver says is true unless you want to be hunting the same deer as everyone else you need more room as the deer will range a long way.

Also no offense intended but another factor to consider is what your objectives are. If you are trying to manage the land and raise trophy class deer then you need to allow a lot more land per hunter. If you are just looking for average deer then less acreage per hunter.

As a general rule I have always considered a minimum of 100 acres per hunter in the hill country and 300-500 acres per hunter in south or west texas.

One other factor would be layout of the ranch. Our ranch is only 185 acres but is over a mile long. So 3 hunters can hunt safely and not always be seeing the same deer.

Born to hunt, forced to work.

Pyledriver, you hit the nail right on the head. A 100 acres per hunter is not the way to go in my opinion, except may for a few counties in the hill country. Even then, you will be hunting the same deer, there is just alot more of them.
Think about how that pressures the deer. Every hundred acres they are smelling human sent and probably have feeders out the @$$. You might has well all pile in one stand and pick a widow to look out of and hunt if there is that many people hunting a property. Then again, I guess it just depends on the hunters. If your not hunting trophy deer, it probably will not matter anyway. Chances are, that everyone will get a shot at a......DEER. However, in an ideal situation, I would want as few of hunters as possible. The fewer the hunters on the lease, the better the hunting; less pressure, less shooting up the deer, and less traffic so that the deer will feel comfortable.
Bottom line. It is not how many hunters per acre, it is how many deer per acre and how many should be taken, given the number of deer. You can have 100 people on the lease, however, in order to manage the herd, everyone should not be trying to fill their tags. There should be a predetermined number of does and bucks to be harvested in order to maintain the herd and provide good hunting for next year.
