I am thinking about trading in my dad's Remington .270 soon and getting either a tikka 7mm-08 or .270. I am a lefty so I really want to trade it in for a left bolt gun that I will actually use. I think i would prefer the 7mm but I want something to remember him by so thinking of going with the .270. All my other bolt guns have synthetics stocks so I am going wood stock like the Remington he has now.

Will use it for target shooting to 500 to 800 yards and hunting deer or hogs

My vote is 7 mm-08. I'm building one now.

If you want something to remember him by, then just keep his rifle. Otherwise, go with the 7/08.

This. If you get rid of your dad's rifle, I think you will regret it.

First, don't sell your dad's rifle. You will regret it in the future. The memories are worth more than a R700 will bring. With target shooting, one of the 308 family cartridges will be the way to go. 7-08 is great, but requires reloading for target ammo. If you don't reload, good 308 ammo is abundant for hunting and target shooting. 260 or 6.5 Creedmoor would be the next options that fill both roles. 7-08 is a great round, but just does not have factory target ammo available.

Also invest in a decent scope. It is at least as important as the rifle and ammo.

For wood stocks that fit both roles, look at Accurate Innovations.

Good luck.

7mm-08 will fit the bill very nicely 2cents Like Sneaky and Jeff said though. Don't get rid of your dad's rifle as you will regret it.

Agree with the advice already offered above. Keep your Dads rifle. Many guns can be replaced but those from Family cannot.

My thouhhts on caliber, I have 2 7mm08s and no 270

Agree with others. Don't get rid of Dad's rifle. Someday you will regret that. Otherwise go 7mm08.

A lefty can hunt with a right handed bolt action just fine. You might not have quite as fast of a follow-up shot but if you make the first shot count then it's not an issue. 7mm-08 is a great round, but a .270 is nothing to sneeze at. No animal you hit with it will know the difference. One day you will take great pleasure from pulling Dad's old gun out and taking it hunting or to the range.

I have both my grandfathers rifles and my dad's. I'd sell my kidneys first.

I'd save $20 a week for next year and buy a 7-08 or save $30 and build a custom

7mm-08 over Dad's 270?

Are you serious?

I'm a big 7mm-08 fan, so you know what I am going to suggest.

Also...agree with the others here, don't sell your fathers rifle.

I'm a big 7mm-08 fan, but I'm going with the others and suggesting you keep your dad's rifle. I don't know how old you are, but I can tell you the older you get, the more you want to keep that connection to your dad/grandfather, etc. If you don't keep your dad's rifle you will absolutely regret it later. Not trying to pressure you, but I couldn't hold my head up if I didn't express my opinion here. If you haven't figured it out, DON'T GET RID OF YOUR DAD'S RIFLE!!!

In case others haven't made the point clear, don't sell your dad's gun. 7-08 is a good caliber if you reload.

Looks like y'all have this covered.

Keep dad's.

Buy a 7-08.

If you don't hand load, buy that equipment also.

One of the greatest feelings I have had was to pass down grandpa's rifle to my kid so they can pass it down to their kids.... I have my great grandpa's long barreled 30-30 winchester 94 rifle that I will hand down to one of my grand children.

I agree with everyone else about selling. I'd prefer the 7-08 in a short action and a .270 in a long action; both are great, so there's no bad decision. I'll also say that I'm a very recent Tikka convert, so buy with confidence.

I have great memories of my Dad's Winchester M61 and his Winchester M12, but I cherish his wedding ring and his Bible and his watch and his diamond stick pin more than his guns.

Back to topic.

I have two 22 Rifles that have been in my family for 100 years.
They are my most prized possessions.
