Hey y'all, hope everyone is doing well.
About a week ago I had a coyote in my front yard- it was yipping in the tree line but because of our proximity to the road I wasn't comfortable scanning for eyeshine and shooting in that general direction.
Tonight it is back- the neighbor was having some sort of issue with her chickens I guess because one was really squawking this evening. Guess it was attracted because as soon as the sun went down it's out- sounds like it is in the wooded area that is inbetween our houses.
As we have a 7 year old who likes to play in that area, dogs, and just finished our chicken pen, can't let it slide. The problem is logistically it is unsafe to shoot in the area it is frequenting.
I can't use snares or a leg hold because of my dogs.
Any ideas on how to get the job done and not put anyone at risk?

Try a large Havahart trap with a chicken in it. You'll have to keep your dogs up for a few nights.

Ah, that is a good idea! This is probably a really dumb question but I am assuming a dead chicken? If a live one, do I tie the poor SOB in there on a short enough tether it can't activate the door?

They make live traps with bait cages.

I'd use a live chick. I've seen chicks at Tractor Supply. He'll find it.

Wasn't aware of bait cages- that makes a lot of sense. If the chick lives through the terror and manages not to get pulled through the bait cage, it will win a place in the coop Will go see what TSC and the local ranch stores have in ways of live traps. Thank you gentlemen!

Did you ever find a shotgun that would be soft on your shoulder?

Little baby goats are perfect live bait. Tie one up to a tree in a direction that you can shoot. Shouldn't take long once the sun goes down.

JLP, sounds like a solid plan but I'm not sure what I'd do with a goat after it served its purpose. Don't have good enough fence to keep one. I guess I could eat it but, I'm a little too fond of the baby ones.
Jet, I got so many great suggestions here and really want to get a gas operated one (leaning towards the Remington Versamax, has awesome reviews in regards to low recoil) but, in the way it always happens, unforeseen circumstances made $$ a little too tight. Soon, I hope, and definitely by next dove season! Thanks for asking

Video is a must! Maybe we will be able to freezeframe the exact moment the chick loses its mind Ron, wasn't wasting any time was he? Nice clean shot. I'd do that if it weren't for proximity to neighbors houses. Thank you, Snake! Neither one of us has actually been able to get on a yote so as practical as it is to kill it, it would be nice to skin as well! My apologies to the moderators for originally posting this in the wrong section.
