Hogs are getting a bit out of hand on our place and trying to come up with a more effective technique when hunting (please don't suggest traps and copters). We typically use 4 wheel drive trucks, spot lights and AR-15's. Hogs are in the open out on our wheat fields. This past weekend we acquired a couple Polaris's with light bars, which give us much better speed and maneuvering, but the rides not smooth enough to use AR's without stopping. Was only able to get 5 pigs before they cleared the field. (one we ran over ) I'm thinking a better option might be 12ga semi-auto with extended mag and buck shot. Anyone use this technique from a moving UTV? Would a red dot or laser make sense on a shotgun in this circumstance? My biggest concern is that 8 shots before reload is gonna limit the damage I can do. If you've used buckshot on hogs let me know your thoughts.

Thermal scopes and mid-weight calibers will increase your take by twice fold.
You'll be able to stalk in closer and shoot more efficiently versus your current described tools.
That's my two cents
P.S. - you could invite a guy who has that equipment out that lives in the area and can assist in pressuring them a few nights a week...

His success rate varies. Once the first pig goes down the field empties pretty quickly. I've been shooting 6.8 for the past several years. Just switched to Barnes TSX. Very effective round so far.

Night vision, thermal, suppressors and some technique. Using a vehicle mounted thermal, was able to spot a big sounder in a wheat field. Wet sows with dozens of piglets. Stalked to within 30 yards up wind with out detection.
Setup closest to cover and targeted the hogs farthest away. With the suppressors, this had the effect of driving them towards us and away from cover into the open field. Increased the opportunity for follow up shots. Dropped three big sows (wet) two juveniles and a couple piglets. Sense is most of the piglets hadn't been weaned yet, so the total may be much higher...

But, if your overall goal is to reduce the hog population, why not traps?

Buy a Sega 12 gauge and two 30 rd drums loaded with 00 buck shot, or regular mags/sticks if you like. Buckshot is hell on pigs in range. I used a 30 rd drum on a Sega 12 and it was a blast.

But, if your overall goal is to reduce the hog population, why not traps? We have the state trapping on two shared fence lines already.

I can think of few things more exciting on a hunt than getting that opportunity, the kicker of course is the "in range" part.

A big hogs skin is too tough for buckshot unless at a really close distance in my experience. Unless you get an ear shot or lucky spine shot. It will probably kill them, but you'll spend a good amount of time looking for the body. And I don't think I'd shoot slugs from a moving bouncing utv.

With a dead coyote choke i can keep 6 of of 9 OO on a 12x18 target at 70 yards. My gun actually likes the cheap Remington OO.
