Hit the lease for a few hours today and had a ball. Thought scenting was off but a nice 5-10mph breeze helped. Both pups held birds today and let me move in to flush. Buck the 8 month old still moved some but getting close. 6 month old Babe is really pretty far along and holding till I get there 90% of the time. Fun day. Only sad part was listening to Frank wine as we left this morning, he no like.

My picture skills are almost as bad as my shooting. He pointed multiple times
today. Wild birds can teach them a lot in a short time.

Babe had her birds and about 12 yards in front of her. She has really been on the ground only 3 times due to a real strong dislike for sand burrs but getting over it.

Greatness. Been there with the sand burrs. Had one which would not hunt and one that never minded. There in one sand burr field which holds birds. We always put my friends setter Beckett down in there. Thanks for posting.

Why won't you boot dogs who don't run in sandburs

What do you plan for the breaking process? It sounds to me that collar conditioning is about all they will need.

Will collar condition and kill as many birds as I can for them in Feb. I will send them up to Virgil Moore in March & April and let him stanch them up and evaluate whether or not they show potential to run as derbies next fall. If either one does they will go north with Virgil this summer. If they don't I'll scratch their ears and get them ready to hunt next fall.

That's the great thing about spring pups. You can socialize them and take them hunting before the breaking process. You have to collar condition fall pups before you put them in the field if you plan to hunt them the first year.

My year old pup is lame for a day every time we hunt. He bails off into prickly pear like its not even there! Got to love a dog with that kind of desire to hunt.

Good looking dogs.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Chet, you must have reallly high standards/expectations for your dogs. Looks like your hand me downs would be top dog on most bird dog strings

Nope, just a poor judge of which to keep. grin The pups Coonie showed were out of a fine litter. And several other pups I've sold to folks here on the forum were well bred and had a real chance to be a good kind of dog but may not have fit in my breeding program or just had a feature not to my liking. I'd be a fool to sell pups with holes or problems on a forum I frequent.

Glad to see Tex getting it done, always liked that little rascal. She and lil Ace make a nice brace.
