do yall put these near your feeders or in another area? I'm rehabbing an old feeder in the next couple weeks and i want to put out a block or two as well. just didnt know what the norm is....

Yes or the pigs will take them. If you have a feed pen, just throw it in there. If not get a milk crate and some type of anchor.

I keep a trace mineral block in a low, sawed-off plastic barrel, wired to a t-post by my feeder. Keeps the interest in the area up year around.

I just use the plan old white salt block for about $5. put it about 10 feet from the feeder. But I don't have a hog problem. When I first put it out, I cover the top with corn. After that i will see them licking it every now and then, but a lot in the summer months.

Im thinking two milk crates. One for mineral and one for white salt. I saw some 6" garden u-spikes at home depot. Figured I'd just put those through the bottom of the crate. I cant wait to see how big a party gets captured on my cameras after all is set up lol. Corn and protein in the feeder with 2 blocks as well... pigs and deer and coons should be having the time of their lives.

Those 6" will work if hogs cannot access it, i take 18"-24" or rebar and fold it in half through the bottom

I tried a mineral block in my feeder pen. Set it right in front of the camera and never got a pic of a deer licking it. Rain finally dissolved it.

I have tons of pics of deer, hogs, and coyotes licking my mineral blocks. I just buy the 50 lb blocks from Tractor Supply for like $7.

Pretty much the same as Mr T, but I buy the brown trace mineral salt block, I don't have a high deer population, but they almost finished one this past fall in 4 months, usually it will be good for almost 12 months.

Any thoughts on why they eat them up on your places but won't touch them on our place?

they may be getting all they need from the natural forage. i hunt 2 places 30mins apart and the preferences of the deer are very different.

I have no scientific proof at all about this, just my own observations on my property, but...the closer the salt block is to water the more I seem to go through. What I'm talking about is 400 yards from water, one a year. Ten yards from water, two a year. But honestly, I don't have a clue if that has anything to do with why they consume twice the amount in one area as they do the other.

The one place we hunt has alot of surface minerals. Zinc, iron, copper all easily visible and im sure theres others. As well as spring fed ponds. On this property they wont touch a mineral block. On our new property the animals finished it in 2 weeks

I have found that our deer consume more salt in the summer months especially when the bucks are in velvet.
