I am wondering about the cords that you can run down the bore of your rifle. they look like a fast way to clean your rifle. Is there a down side to them. I am currently using a dewey rod with patches. Any thoughts?

If partial bore cleaning works for you then they're okay. Bore snakes won't do nearly as good a job as a conventional rod, jags, and patches.

Wasted money.

Use a rod and patches.

They do a great job for 92% of shooters and especially those with certain lever actions or semi autos. If you shoot handguns or shotguns they are even more handy. Easier to carry on an actual hunting trip and they don't break or bend.

They're only good for ONE pass through the bore. After that you're pulling a nasty cord back through. And I've yet to see a bore that could be properly cleaned with one pass through it.

The number one reason I'll never use one.

I use one on my black guns, at least partially. I'll hose it down with gun scrubber and run it through before I use jag and patch. I've found doing that cuts down significantly on number of patches I use. It's definitely not a stand alone gun cleaning system but I never intended for it to be.

I don't use one, but if you rap a clean patch around the end of it a clean patch is the last thing through the barrel.

Charcoal briquettes are crap.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

I prefer my 20 year old Weber gas grill.

I also like the Ottis cable system VS rods.

I carry one on trips to the mountains for emergency use only. Just in case a little mud/dirt gets in the bore. Other than that, I'll have a cleaning rod/jag/brush/solvent back in camp

the new style rat traps are way better than the old wooden ones as well.

This! I would not use one to "clean" the bore, but they do an excellent job of "clearing" the bore in the field.
