I'd like to hear from the blade smiths here as to their opinion of the show. I really enjoy it in as much as it takes people well beyond their comfort zone revealing their skills and fortitude. I've never made a knife or even seen it done other than this show but I am now hooked and interested in giving it a go just to see what I can do.

I'd like to know from you guys that make knives what your thoughts and opinions of the show are? What are your thoughts on 3 hours to form a blade and six hours to complete a weapon? Seems fast to me...but I guess that is part of the challenge....

I can't do it in that time frame.
When they quench their blades and you see that cool flame up.....they just screwed up the blade.
To do it well enough for it to do well in the field and to be something a man would would be proud to pass it to his kids takes me longer to do on my equipment. But, that is just me. I am old and slow.

Good luck and enjoy learning knife making.

That was my thought on the quench too.....I used to work for a commercial heat treater.....do you temper the blades after hardening them to remove some of the brittleness? I haven't seen them do that....

I don't think most the knifemakers on THF forge their knive blades. Just buy a blank and cut a shape you like and get to cutting and grinding.

I was at a hammer in with Tobin Nieto and he won an episode of FIF. He said the episode is filmed over a period on weeks. From the first stage of competition the blades are tempered overnight. I think it is a cool challenge that sees who had their processes and knowledge. I don't think they can make a blade to their fullest potential but it's cool to see them hustle.

I enjoy the show. When i have a choice between a Hollywood sit-com or a show like Forged in Fire, I know which one i'll be watching.

How "real" is the show? I've seen how "Hollywood" edits shows for time sake....six hours down to 20 minutes and 5 days down to 20 minutes....a lot of stuff has to be cut out....are there important parts of the process that keep getting overlooked....

I enjoy the show....just curious how true to the process of making a knife really is....

Well the time frame is not enough to make a blade to the best of your abilities I think. The nomalization process doesn't seem to be done and the tempering of the blade is done overnight and is not shown. It is still cool as heck to watch though. I know how it feels to watch one of your knives be used hard and cringe and hope that you nailed every process and didn't miss anything that would make it fail.
