With me having health issues I was scared wasn't going to get grandson Zane (14yo) out hunting last season. However, against doctors orders we went anyway. We've been going together since he was 4yo and I wasn't letting a little thing like a heart attack stop us this year. Doc set me up with a wearable defibrillator and off to El Dorado we went.
Saw lots of young bucks the first day. On the second afternoon we were driving a ranch road and saw a buck with a doe at about 400yds....big body mature looking deer. Zane doesn't like hunting blinds or feeders....he loves the spot and stalk game and has gotten very good at it so I thought this may be the perfect opportunity. I pulled off the road a bit and Z got out and started his stalk. It was awesome watching him in stealth mode....slipping along in the brush while leaning out into the road for a peek to make sure deer was still there. Had a crosswind of about 20 so no chance of deer winding him. He covered about half the distance and eased onto edge of road and picked a mesquite bush that I could see moving through my binos....I thought oh no not THAT bush for a rest. But he settled on it and pawpaws old Ruger .270 barked and the buck dropped like a sack of feed off a tailgate when the Remington 130gr hit him right behind the shoulder. I let out a whoop that coulda been heard in Sonora. Drove down to get Z and he was grinning from ear to ear and says....how bout that pawpaw? I ranged the deer at 186yds from where Zs shaking mesquite bush was.
It's his biggest buck yet and one we shall always remember and cherish......one more thing. Z has killed 6 deer and 4 hogs in last few years without a single miss and even more amazing....every animal he's shot has dropped in its tracks without a single step. This was his first body shot. He's a neck busting lil dude.

Great buck, great picture, great story. You're a blessed man. I'd a done exactly like you did - go anyway. Hope you have many, many more seasons with your stealthy grandson.
