Im about to build some deer feeders. I was wondering if anybody has ever tried coating the outside of their metal feeders with a spray/roll on bed liner type material(Rhino liner, linex, ect).

I am wanting these things to last. Anybody ever tried this? Any advantage over regular old paint?

i know , my painted feeder has lasted a long time too. But i may be selling some to a local ranch and i just want to make sure i sell a quality product. I want it to be so good that they tell there buddies about them, and then they buy some.

Go for it deerstalker. Raise that standard bar. I am not sure of the cost but as long as you build the best you can and remember they can always be "GOODER" you don't have to apologize. Sounds good to me, good luck.

it works alright but if it ever falls or gets hit on the side real hard the liner will break off in chunks.....

I think it would be ok if it is economically feasible. As for the flexibility and softness of that stuff I have had 3 different brands of that stuff in different vehicles, and the Rhino Liner was the softest, and the Speedliner was the hardest. The liners stay on real good until it scraped with something heavy or gets a big dent.

IMHO i dont think that it would make ur deer feeder any more durable, simply because it wont help prevent dents in your feeder if dropped etc. Also i dont think they will look very nice. Not tryin to bust ur bubble, but i dont think it would work out for ya. IMO not wort the costs at all....

Figure out a foolproof way to keep racoons off the things and you'll have something. I wouldn't pay extra for a liner coated barrel. There's not much value add there.

Maybe just spray the lid, that's where my feeders rust the fastest. I built my own so I dont have an "overlid" to protect the standard open head drum lid. Just a thought.

Yes, I have actually done LineX for a feeder I used as a display for trade shows. It cost me about 350 bucks including the legs. It did get a tear and rust stains from where the bolts penetrated the barrel. It looks great but certainly would not do it again. I appreciate your attention to detail but suggest finding an alternative.

im thinking a good coat or two of quality paint will do just as well. I do like the idea of coating the lids though, where the water pools.

2 coats of Krylon will do you just fine. Damn firemen, always overthinking things!

Well I have tried all the above over the years and my suggestion is to coat the lids and paint the barrels. Kool seal or rubber coating spray either one.The lids hold water and the portable covers well they seem to get eaten by the squirrels.
