Do snakes leave hibernation for short periods when you have warm weather like we've had here in some parts of Texas?

You bet they do. Killed a rattler last weekend that had crawled out to sun itself.

When I was a teen, I shot a water moccasin swimming through a puddle with ice around the edges. This was in southeast Texas piney woods. Temp was in the mid to high 20s that day. I see them quite often during the warm spells now days. I don't think they have a true "hibernation" period where I'm at.

Haven't worried about snake during winter. Guess that better change. Thanks

Herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians) react by temperature. You may see turtles and snakes active during any warm periods. At my place in north Texas, I have seen copperheads during every month of the year.

If it is 50° or more you better be looking. They won't be as active at low temps but are just as dangerous. They do get hungry.

Yup...find them out an about all year long....I've seen it in the 70's and even 80's in December and January...

Killed another today that had crawled out from under a crease in the slab of the barn. There was a second with just his head visible that crawled back in before I could get to him. It was about 50 degrees at the time and sunny.

If they can get out in the direct sun, they can warm themselves even if it below freezing, but I would not expect them to be too fast even so.

And then light it with a match. Burn the whole thing down. It's the only way to be sure.

I stepped on a snake back in some brush in December hunting. It was real sluggish and barely moved, but I stepped on its tail. He did a quick jolt and slowly squirming away. Scared the hell out of me , but it was a big king snake.

Duck hunted over Christmas break during that cold snap. It was 9 degrees and I was standing in the brush after breaking the ice around my decoys when a turtle popped up 10 yards from me. Little surprised but glad it wasn't a snake.
