Anything but a BFG. They blow up and come apart. Buyer beware!!

Coming from a guy that owns a tire shop, I'd definitely look at Cooper built tires. We see a lot of tires everyday, we average about 750 sales a month and my opinion for price vrs quality you cannot go wrong with Cooper built tires. Feel free to PM me if I can help in anyway.

Stay far far away from Federals if you want to be able to drive without worrying about you or your families safety. My dad had a brand new set on a used pickup he bought a few years back and lost three of them in two months and he drives like a complete paw paw. Broke bands in every one of them. Complete trash.

If you plan to go cheap, PM me and I'd be happy to help you make a decision. I'd stay away from the Federal's they are no good. I've seen a bunch come apart with very low miles. With that said, there are some less expensive tires out there that perform well without breaking the bank. In that case, just do not expect to get 50k miles out of them they will run in the 35k to 40k depending on driving habits and rotations.

I've run various brands and thread tires for years. I truly love the traction, wear (50k miles) and less noise of the Goodyear Duratrac but they are not offered in the size I run on my truck in a load range E. I ran Nitto Trail Grappler M/T the last set, good traction, poor wear, loud!!! I only got 32k miles and would not pass inspection. I moved to the Toyo RT and they have decent traction except in black mud, much quieter than the Nitto and seem to be wearing very well but only have about 7-8k miles so far. I ran Cooper's years ago but got a bad batch that had thread separation issues thru 2 full sets but that's been likely 12-14 years ago. The BFG AT seem to be good traction in more sandy conditions but useless in black mud as they don't clean out, quiet on the road but never had much luck getting much more than 30k miles before being worn out.

I have decided to either run Mastercraft Courser MXT's with as package deal online, or Toyo open Country M/T's. I have a good deal on Toyos from my local guy. He went and gave me a price and he'll give to me on sale. I made up my mind between these two. I am forsure selling my 20 inch rims and we'll drop down to 17 inch rims for a better ride.

what price is he giving you on the toyos? 35x12.50-17 E?

Better buy 2 sets then. One set for now, and another for when they wear out. I loved my MT's minus the noise. Best I ever found them was 1500 OTD.

If your buying a set of wheels too, you should get a better price than $1200 on the Toyo M/T's. My shop is in Waxahachie and my price for that tire would be roughly $1100 if your buying a set of wheels. And if you have a farm tax ID it would probably be cheaper. The big box stores cannot compete with us local guys. We do not have the large overhead etc..to support. Let me know if I can earn your business, I'd be happy to help sir.

We run Jeeps here a couple of weekends a month. Most of the guys are running BFG M/T or A/T tires. I see them put through stuff that would destroy most tires.

The BFG A/T KO is a tough tire that can take a lot of rock pounding and other abuse without cutting the sidewalls. They're built like that purposely. They have acceptable street manners and are quieter than most. Their downfall is deep, sloppy, gooey mud. They fill up and can be challenging at times. But from what you are describing they should do you a good job.

If punctures are a major concern these tires are the best out there in their class. I'll never put anything else on a dual purpose vehicle.

Did you get the road hazard on the RTs? I got my RTs mounted, balanced, road hazard, and alignment for $1600 otd. The last set of MTs I picked up were 1500 mounted, balanced, & no RH on the MTs.

(beats Discount Tire on my 285x70x17 RTs, $1903 out the door )

You have to tell them to make the price better. They will negotiate. I was tire shopping for a friend the other day and 285-75-17 cast $65 per tire more than 35-12.5-17, supply and demand.

No on the Road hazard

I have a question for you all, please do not take it offensively.

In doing business with a box store as such, why would you negotiate a price rather than shopping locally? If the box store quotes a price that is high I would take that as a red flag that they are baiting the area for takers. I really would like to understand the theory behind this thinking. As a business owner I try my best to be as fair priced up front with no hidden fees. Thanks in advance for your responses.

When it comes to tires I don't shop price. I shop service. I want to know and feel comfortable that if one won't balance I won't get the song and dance over it. They'll take it off and replace it with another tire. Sometimes this isn't the case with tire outlets. I also refuse to buy online. What if one of the tires is defective? Sure, they will take it back and replace it, but how are you going to drive that tripod while you are waiting for the new tire?

I have one local shop that gets my business. And they know I recommend them to anyone who asks.

I'll price shop by calling around, but normally land back at a local shop. I've learned with any big box stores, its hit or miss on customer service. For example, the Discount Tire here in Temple has terrible customer service. They wouldn't even order Toyos for me, so I went to some local mom and pop shop and they were $$$ (2 sets of tires ago). The discount in Georgetown, on the other hand, is awesome. They rotated and rebalanced my tires for free, even though I picked up the tires from someone else. Only need for a rebalance was a stick-on weight came off in some mud. I tried to pay them but they just said it was on them and to just buy my next set through them.

So I can see both sides of the spectrum. Big box store vs. local shopping. I prefer local shopping when I can, but I also don't overlook good customer service.

The last set I picked up were from Tires to You here in Temple. They are a fairly new shop, but not really a big box store yet with only 7 or 8 shops in Texas. I had heard they had good CS, so I went and they did. I'll buy more from them.
