Yes.

Don't listen to what anyone tells you about a particular brand of bow.

Go to a pro shop and try out a few bows.

Then go to a different one if you can and try out some more of their bows that the other place didn't have.

You will know you got the right bow for you when you shoot it. Not when someone tells you what brand to try to shoot.

Other than that, there are a ton of really good bows out there and they should be a lot lighter than what you have. Today you can even get custom grips for your compound bow.

My father as a old Hoyt Magnatec and it feels really heavy compared to the newer styles and it's louder too.

As far as sights, stay away from anything that has a plastic sight ring. Find one that is strong. There is some plastic junk out there that will work fine if you are just shooting in your yard or whatever. But they are not that durable for actual hunting. Spend some money and get a good sight with a metal protective ring and bright pins.

I completely agree with Curtis about your bow selection process. I received really bad advise when I first started about there only being ONE brand of bow acceptable. Also agree with what he said about sights, etc. The way you equip your bow will determine a lot with how you feel about it. Get the bow that feels good to you, equip it well, then shoot, and shoot and shoot. Hunting with a bow for big game has been one of most surprisingly exciting experiences of my life. Good luck.

+100 on not listening to the "buy this bow" hype. I worked in a bowshop for several years and I had all kinds of people coming in with bows that their "expert" friends recommended. The only thing I would recommend is going to a reputable bow shop and having them measure your draw. I have measured hundreds of archers and very few of them have draws over 30". I'm not saying that you don't, I'm just saying that you need to have it measured by someone who really knows what they are doing. Missing your draw length by as little as 1/2" will give you a bow that you will never be able to shoot well...

Depending on what you re looking for in bowhunting, you may enjoy shooting a recurve or longbow. There are some very good bows available for traditional archery, that are deadly, accurate, affordable, and fun to shoot. feel free to pm me if you have ?s

the only advise I can give a newcomer would be to never put a sight on your bow, if I could do it over I would have started instinctively

This is all GREAT advice its all about what feels good to you and what you are comfortable with take your time, try alot of bows, and remember the most expensive is not always the best for you.
