That was the story of the day. Wasn't intentional but ended up making the majority of the bag.

Hopefully we haven't set a precedent for the rest of the year!

Yeah it can be tough in certain lighting conditions to get a good look for sure.

Some hunters don't care. A duck is a duck to them.

If I can help it, I won't shoot the girls and have finished hunts without a limit because of it.

That's just me though. I have no prob. with what others do. cheers

You sure there's not a fourth category, the "Crazy-azz duck hunters who took one too many hits of acid"?

Where I hunt, its down in a dark creek bottom amd you cant tell what they are til the hunt is almost over. Though weve gotten lucky and killed more drakes than hens

So you can't ID the ducks you are shooting? How do you make sure you are within the law regarding bag limits? For instance, how do you ensure that you aren't taking 3 Mallard hens?

Not Internet Game Warden-ing you...I'm genuinely curious.

I'm happy when I see a duck, so I'm not picky on their sex. How do I know that a hen hasn't identified as a drake her whole life? I don't even ask them what bathroom they go to.

Kilo11....I took the landowner who isn't a duck hunter. I shot a drake, he shot 2 hens out of the same group. Only other bird to come in was a single hen on my side so I took it. It was pretty easy to pick em out for me since I only had the opportunity at two birds the drake and hen.

The other fella lacking experience was relying on me to tell him bag limits and such. Hence me saying don't shoot another mallard unless your positive it's a drake. Turned out not to be a problem.

That's why I put not the intention it was just the way the workable birds panned out. He wasn't going to hold back, and I wasn't about to stop the man who lets me hunt his land from shooting a legal duck.

I wasn't questioning anything you did, only the post that I quoted.

Takes two to make eggs.... hard to prove taking one off either side is hurting more than the other...

I read an article that said hunters killing hens had no bearing on duck numbers. I try to shoot drakes. I am not a duck snob. But I do love to call my brother a hen killer when he shoots a hen and ask him why he just doesn't drive to Canada and stomp on the eggs. Its all in fun.

Same here. The only aspect of hen killing I care about is staying within the daily bag limit.

Should tell him every hen he drops he owes you a bottle of whisky!

I can go for that. He is so bad he will even water swat a hen.

Its all about incentives, people will do or not do what is best for them.

The regulations need to "reward" taking all drakes with an extra bag limit. For example, 8 total ducks if they are all drakes..... 4 if your bag limit includes a hen.

BINGO, several studies have come to the same conclusion. Now that being said, with mallards and pinners I'm gonna go for the drakes first. If it's a slow day or I have any shots left I won't hesitate to take what is legal.

That's correct. I spend 1000s a year planting etc....if I get 2 mallard hens on a hunt- so be it. Do look for green if can be avoided
