Well this past weekend I did a deer hunt on Ft Hood and seen nothing but pigs ended up killing 6 of them in two days and only seen a couple young deer and a couple does. Fast forward to today I got into the same area and requested the same stand since I had spread about 100 lbs of corn in the 3 shooting lanes a couple days earlier. Got to the stand around 230 PM and had deer coming in shortly after. Had 5 doe come in start eating corn and then had a very nice young 8 come out to eat corn and harrass the doe. About 20 min later had another very young 7 point come walking in and him and the young 8 sparred a little. The 8 was about 11-12 wide and will be nice next year. After a few minutes they all started walking off slowly and as I was watching them in the bins at about 200 yds I see a buck that I thought was the 8 but realized it was a different buck and he was wide. I brought up my rifle and put it on 10 power so I could find him easier and I couldn't find him anywhere bc of all the cover and then bam he walks out perfect broadside shot. He was about 200 yds I placed the reticle on his shoulder and squeezed and to my surprise he just stood there. I knew it was a clean miss and I must have shot a small oak limb between me and him or something bc no way I just missed I had a very stable position. Anyways the deer all scattered but didn't really know what happened and to my surprise the wide buck walked back out and started walking away from me, at about 250 yds he stopped and turned but had a shrub in front of him and all I could see was head and neck so I took the neck shot and dropped him in his tracks with the ole Browning A-Bolt in 270 shooting Chads custom loads. It was a long season of either not seeing much at all or just seeing young legal bucks that I didn't want to shoot. I thought this deer was gonna be 4 1/2 but the Biologist on Ft Hood aged him at 6 1/2 which in itself makes this buck a public land trophy to me. He won't score high but he is an old hill country public land trophy. Edit to add he was 17 1/4 wide.
