So it seems each year this particular lake throws a little twist and hunts differently than we think.
It usually starts out as primarily a feeding hole with the majority of birds coming in to feed in the morning and then after the food is gone..in the past It has turned into a roost and held literally thousands....well after the first week of the season we haven't seen good numbers coming into feed or a lot roosting. We had a big rain right before the season which I think put most of the food to deep for the ducks.
I tried an afternoon/evening hunt and saw the most birds I had seen since opening day coming in between 1-4:30pm.
I really love hunting the mornings but it looks like we need to be out there in the afternoon. Anyone hunt afternoons?

I never hunted a morning until moving to Texas. Doesn't seem to be a big enough concentration of birds around where I am to hunt loafers. Here it seems to be, try and scratch a couple at first light, wait out the hour dead period and then hope the 8:30-10 flight gives decent birds. I've hunted several afternoons and shot very very few except for a couple years where there were lots of ducks around This isn't Kansas where you can go out at 12:30 and pick out your green heads until 2 or so when it's time to go

The only place in Texas that I've been able to kill good ducks in the afternoon is when I lived in Lubbock... I hunted in Hart, Abernathy and Floydada. I had a hole in Hart that they'd come to water and loaf around that produced lots of limits of mallards and pintails. Dry field hunting up there was pretty killer in the afternoon too.. they'll feed very heavily if they're about to migrate... that's when you can really whack em

We never really thought it would produce either. I just decided to go one afternoon because we skipped the morning due to rain. I am not kidding you a group of about 500+ teal came in about 3pm. I'm going to do a little scouting and see what happens.
A lot of times it seems you could just sit at this place all day and have ducks trickle in we just aren't getting the typical good early morning flights.

Most WMA's don't allow PM hunting anymore. WMA's are where I duck hunt mostly.
Used to get a lot of comments on this forum in the past if you posted about hunting in the PM. Folks would say it wasn't kosher...let em rest...yada yada yada
I used to enjoy getting off early and doing a PM hunt, I'm more orthodox now

I love afternoon hunts. I usually hunt more open water, than backwater slews and puddles in the PM. I blow my single reed calls, that you can hear two counties away, with great success on those afternoons. Usually shoot at bigger groups too. I see the most activity in the afternoon, 48-72 hrs after big migration days when the temp rises to 45-50 degrees, and the wind comes out of the South. With an 8-10 degree rise in temp and a bluebird sky, they seem to spend less time in the fields eating, and more time socializing. It's almost like the migration reverses for a day or so.
