Another straw man. No one is saying it can't be done - just that other choices provide more margin for error. Again, physics.

Tell me in the good book where God said thou shalt deem 270 Winchester adequate for white tailed deer and 223 rem insufficient and I will change my ways. By using your logic a 223 isn't enough because a 270 is better. If your going to use that logic then stick with it an buy a 50 cal or whatever the largest shoulder fired rifle is because a 270 might work, but a 50 cal will do it better with more energy.

Another straw man. That's not my logic at all. The debate comes from the fact that it's at the margins.

There are no "straw men", just you using it as an excuse for something you disagree with.

No, I'm not. Making up something someone said and/or arguing points that don't apply to the discussion are straw men - pure and simple.

What have I brought up that doesn't apply? The thing that doesn't apply is your arbitrary definition of what is/isn't enough.

I'm 1 for 1 with my bow this year and 0-1 with a gun. Go figure

Caliber didn't matter in my case with a gun shooting almost two foot high @ 100 yds clap

Long thread, but short answer is yes. My son dropped a doe in her tracks this season with a 40 grain ballistic tip at 55 yards high shoulder. It was beautiful

beating a dead horse!
simple as this
223 good shot= dead deer
243 good shot= dead deer
270 good shot= dead deer
and so on,and on,and on
Marginal to bad shot with any caliber= unpredictable outcome

I wonder since Romo hurt his back if he now hunts with a 223?

Unless your trying to kill the time with a .223

Then you'll have a fight on your hands

I asked a question WHY people don't like the .223? It seems to be the margin of error is less (which I somewhat agree/disagree) and they will run more and have less of a blood trail than a larger round (which I agree).

A family member I know uses there ar15 for deer and use to always aim for the shoulder (so I thought). But found out over thanksgiving, since he is older now and can't move as good, he aims higher up to hit the back bone to drop them (no running off then). I think a few years back he shot a deer with it in the shoulder and it ran in the woods (maybe 50 yards in) into a creek bottom and he had a tough time getting it out.

I am young and get a little bit of enjoyment from looking for the deer (kinda like excitement from checking your trotline) and probably wouldn't mind dragging it out of the creek bottom. However my next project will be a 6.5 Grendel ar15 (if I can hide it from the wife) which I hope to use for deer.

My last 2 cents (like people have said) is shot placement and shooting. I shoot a 3/4 inch pattern at 150 yards pretty consistently. I have no worries about using it. Another family member uses a 30-06 and shoots a 2 inch pattern at 150 yards. I think that is not good and would not deer hunt if I was shooting 2 inches a 150 yards.
