Water is less than 6 inches.

What is your preferred method of hiding? No trees for 20 miles any direction not a bush larger than a hamster for 15 miles...

Might be a pintail smackdown....going to be muddy, that's for sure.

Avian x frame

Great blinds if you brush them in good

Or use layouts in the water

So yall subscribe to putting a big @ss blind in the middle of a field and call it good?

I always felt like birds were too wary to fall for that.

Layout blinds will look out of place just as much from the sky in my opinion.

I was thinking this:

Build a layout board (out of 1x4s and plywood) lay in the mud and surround myself with canada deeks....

maybe I'm over thinking it and giving the ducks too much credit??

trying to do this hunt next weekend if possible.

That's how we hunted sandhill cranes near Edna.

Open field in a heavily brushed in avian X frame blind and killed many a birds

Hey I'm down to give it a shot. I have some blind frames and I can cut down some cedars and take them along...

better than laying in the mud...

thanks

Lay in the mud on your back, put as much natural grass around you and keep still.

get a shovel a tarp and any natural cover that might be around and lay down. never know until you go. plus if they come in the 30 min before sunrise youll have the low light advantage

If you just get muddy enough you start to blend in.

You can lay down a couple wooden pallets, then put your layout blind on top of those to keep you dry. Brush in the blind and the exposed corners of the pallets. Russian Thistle works well if you're in west Texas.

A -frame type blind with a lot of brush and full bodies... it's no different than brushing a boat with no backdrop. You can kill them with a very good brushed blind out in the open... I don't think that's any secret.

I've had varying results to say the least. I'm going to give it a whirl. Taking a portable blind frame and lots o brush with me, going for comfort since I'm taking the 60s crew (pops and freinds). Hope these old guys lay em out!!!

Will let you know.

I like the pallet idea....keep the footing comfortable!

I use two different boats for this situation. To us it looks like a boat. Ducks can't reason, to a duck a long skinny boat in a natural color for the surroundings and without any movement, is just a log or other unremarkable object in the water. For really shallow to open mudflat I use a low profile camo kayak that is large enough for me to lay in. I can drag in a long ways over mud if need be. If there are any logs I will place it beside or near them to become another log. I can scoop mud, bass grass, or bank drift material on top of the boat as well.

If there is a few inches of water I now use a bigger boat just for layout hunting. It has a large deck that I can dump bank material or mud right onto the deck to blend in. More recently it has antique forward facing oars added. But if there is no water or water say less than 3 inches deep. I can't move it. It is too flat bottomed and will just suck to the mud. But I prefer this boat if I can just ram it into on onto a shallow mud or sand flat with out dragging it.

In your situation I do also sometimes use a body booting type tactic of placing Canada silhouette or oversized Mallard silhouette decoys around and close to the boat help cover me and any movement. Species dependent on where I am hunting. Some places the resident Geese are not duck friendly and the ducks will avoid them.

You can also get a black diving dry suit and just lay down in the mud or on a piece of plywood thats just a little larger than you are. Smear the suit with some of the local mud.

You will stay dry and warm, you won't need any camo clothing other than a facemask.

Have used this on mud flats and in shallow water. It is deadly.

Layout blind in water or drag some hay there- bury yourself in native grass. Any above ground blind will not work, IMO- unless you have it out there for a week or so before you hunt it

If you have a Ghillie suit. I wear the top and cap- waders underneath. Deadly. Have had ducks just about land on me

I'll post pictures of our a-frame brushed with cedar in a small depression on the morning of the hunt... we took 8 people and killed 48 mallards, widgeon and pintails... it doesn't flare birds... Fred Zink and them smoke their [censored] out of A-frames with no back drop and different color brush on the reg... if you're on the X it doesn't matter
