I got the mother of all invitations this weekend to quail hunt the Turkey Track Ranch (east of Stinnett, Texas) and it was everything I thought it would be and more. If you haven't ever heard of the Turkey Track you can read about it on the Texas State Historical Online Handbook. It is an 87,000 acre continuous spread that is bordered on the south by the Canadian River. As you can imagine the quail hunting was unbelievable, but what was just as awesome to me was seeing the Adobe Walls battle ground where 28 white buffalo hunters fought and defeated over 700 indians. The battleground is about 1 mile south of the ranch headquarters, and I found it to be very intriguing. Billy Dixon is the buffalo hunter who picked off the Indian's medicine man from 7/8 of a mile and ended the battle. I eat the history stuff up, and when it comes to Texas Panhandle ranching history, the Turkey Track is near the top of the list. Hopefully I'll get to do it again sometime!

That is awesome. We used to lease the Butterfield pasture on the Watt's Lambshead Ranch. There was a marker on our lease called the Butterfield Gap. Also the old settlers cabins were rebuilt. They had 4' tall rock fences and the doors all had a cross cut in them to shoot out of. Really neat history. I would love to see the Turkey Track ranch. Lucky you!

It is cool. We went past Fort Phantom Hill the other day.
The post was established on November 14, 1851 by five companies of the 5th Infantry, just north of Abilene. It was used to control indian uprisings and then again during the Civil War.
In November 1853, approval was given for the military to abandon the fort. Shortly after the troops left on 6 April 1854, fire destroyed most of the log walls and thatch roofs of the buildings that made up this large and complex five-company post on the Texas Frontier. Several stone buildings, stone chimneys, and the stone building foundations remain intact today.
Over 500 people lived there at one time.

I would luv to take my metal detector there That would be awesome. Unfortunately, the Turkey Track is extremely private and you probably couldn't get that done. No telling what you'd find though...
