I shot a rifle a few years ago that had a brake on it, and thats the extent of experience with that. However I really liked that it made the rifle kick straight back and no uplift on the gun. Now I am entertaining the idea of having one installed on a model 700 Remington. So I have been looking online by searching words like "muzzle brake" and plenty of options come up but not really what I wanted. What I would like is a brake that is the same diameter as my barrel, which is a standard and not a heavy barrel. Does a brake need to be larger to be effective? Am I searching the wrong word? Any recommendations for a guy that is uneducated??? This picture is the look I would like.

The larger the surface area of the fins, the more effective the brake is, specifically, the first port.
You can buy a brake close to the O.D. of your barrel. Take the rifle, and the brake to a gunsmith for him to thread the muzzle, and time the brake. Also ask him to turn down the brake O.D. to match the O.D. of the muzzle.

I know it is not as flush as you want but I can't recommend these brakes from APA enough.

Not to hijack here, but what does it usually cost to have a barrel threaded?

$50-$100
Timed brakes are on the upper end of the cost spectrum.

LMH, if you have a sporter contour barrel and you want the brake to be the same size as the barrel, your options will be limited. The most common type brake to fit the same contour as the sporter size barrels will be a Vias style brake. Many companies make them, but the Vias style is ported 360 degrees around. I would look at these style brakes to fit your barrel contour flush. But if you want more effectiveness, then look at the vented brakes. The brakes that have the vents out the side and maybe the top, will be difficult to fit flush with the narrow barrel contour. There's just not enough meat there (enough diameter) to work right. The brake is effective because of the larger vents to direct the gasses outward or rearward. I highly recommend an APA little bastard brake. I run the fat bastard on my 300 WM, and it tames the recoil better than anything I have shot. Also, a good brake at a good price are the Harrel's brakes. I will be running one on my 7mm/300WM rifle. Similar Vias style brake:

Another option on sporter weight barrels is to have the barrel ported. Basically they remove the rifling from the last couple of inches of the bore, then drill concentric holes all around to vent the gases. Works the same way as a brake, but it's permanent and can't be undone without cutting down the barrel or replacing it. I had the barrel ported on my 7 mag and it has way less recoil than most .243's, but the muzzle blast is severe. If you shoot it without hearing protection you'll be very, very sorry.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

Keep in mind that with any muzzle brake, you will have to wear hearing protection, even when hunting, because of the increased sound level directed sideways and rearward.

The Harrels break (spelled like that because Chad love when I do that) is the best bang for the buck. If you shoot prone at all you don't one a spiral break you want the ported break. Dang, sort of hard to spell it that way so many times...JG, check on Chad he may have just stroked. If you mentioned Hornady ballistic tips I think his heart might stop
