does the noise of a semi auto (ar's) defeat the purpose of the suppresser?

Texas Lawman did a video awhile back where he had a video camera at a downed hog and was shooting it with various rifles to show the sound the animal hear. Worth finding and watching.
I don't have a ton of experience with them, but I have noticed that there is a loud thud of the bullet hitting the pig that is louder than the rifle. You can hear that on a lot of hog hunting videos too if your paying attention and have the volume turned up...

does the noise of a semi auto (ar's) defeat the purpose of the suppresser? That depends. If you are shooting supersonics, definitely not. If you are shooting sub sonics the sound of the action isn't whisper quiet but the sound of the bullet hitting its target will probably be just as loud to whatever animal you are shooting.

Supersonic loads will still have the 'crack' of the bullet breaking the speed of sound. This is not a quiet process.

Subsonic loads may not work the action on your auto. That would make your AR a single shot,

Subsonic loads may not work the action on your auto. That would make your AR a single shot, If you have the correct spring and gas block it should be fine. My .300 blk cycles subs perfectly fine with a suppressor on it. Just have to play around with it to get the right setup.

When suppressed my 308 AR is louder than my 308 bolt action.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I haven't foud a subsonic that will cycle in an AR. A suppressor will quieten supersonic in an AR more than u would think. Usually you'll see a 30 decibel drop. My DPMS 223 with a 20" bull barrel is around 129decibels suppressed.

It is hit or miss if they will cycle with no can on.

No. But the action of the semi will be the loudest thing when shooting subsonic (depending on the caliber). If you want really quiet, get a bolt action and shoot subs.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

This^ A 300 blk bolt gun shooting subs is stupid quiet. It is surprising how loud the round hitting its target is when you don't hear any other noise besides the firing pin.
